GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team earned its seventh straight victory by rolling to a 12-4 win Tuesday afternoon over visiting Franciscan in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at Jack Behringer Field. Grove City completed a season sweep of the Barons and earned its 20th overall win this spring.
Senior catcher
Tanner Orner (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) paced Grove City's 15-hit attack by going 4 for 4 with two doubles and two singles. Senior second baseman
Bobby Abbott (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) homered, doubled, scored three times and knocked in four runs. Senior left fielder
Jesse Clary (Cranberry Township, Pa./Eden Christian) added a two-run homer in the win.
Sophomore catcher
C.J. Saylor (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) and sophomore right fielder
Anthony Tambellini (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) both had two hits and also scored twice.Â
Grove City (20-7, 17-4 PAC) took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Abbott belted a three-run homer, his first round-tripper of the season.Â
Franciscan tied the game in the top of the second but Grove City quickly reclaimed the lead when Clary cracked a two-run homer on an 0-2 pitch, giving Grove City a 5-3 lead. Clary and Saylor now share the team lead with three home runs each this year.
Grove City then added three more runs in the second as Abbott doubled in Tambellini while Orner's two-run single brought home Saylor and Abbott. Orner's two-run double in the fourth inning scored Abbott and senior first baseman
Bubba Hamilton (Garner, N.C./Waynesboro, Pa.).
The Wolverines then added single runs in the seventh and eighth innings. Freshman DH
Isaak Flaming (Dresden, Maine/Morse) doubled in Orner to put Grove City up 11-4 in the seventh.
Sophomore left fielder
Kaz Hoffman (West Middlesex, Pa./West Middlesex) led off the eighth with a double and later scored on Hamilton's ground out. Hoffman has hits in five straight at-bats. Hamilton also singled in the win to extend his hitting streak to a career-best 19 games.Â
Sophomore pitcher
Austin Basham (Mansfield, Ohio/Lexington) earned the win by pitching 4 2/3 innings of relief. Basham (1-1) allowed one run and two hits while striking out two. Senior
D.J. Newby (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) started and yielded two earned runs in two innings. Freshman
Nick Guidas (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine Richland) struck out three men in 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.Â
This is the sixth time that Grove City has reached the 20-win mark. Grove City's 17 conference victories are a program record.Â
The Wolverines will host Chatham at 1 p.m. Friday in conference play. Game One will be a nine-inning conference game, followed by a seven-inning non-conference game. The teams will then play two league games Saturday at Chatham.
