Grove City outlasts Bethany

BETHANY, W.Va. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team improved to 7-0 overall Saturday afternoon by pulling out a 72-66 win at Bethany in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at Hummel Field House. 

Grove City took the lead for good by scoring the final 14 points of the third quarter. The Wolverines trailed 42-40 with five minutes left in the quarter but sophomore guard Emma Vezzosi (St. Mary's County, Md./Leonardtown) tied the game with a jumper. That ignited the 14-0 run.

Senior forward Jessica Kimbrell (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) put Grove City ahead by sinking two free throws. She then hit a jumper on Grove City's next possession. 

Junior forward Allison Podkul (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) pushed the lead to 48-42 with 1:27 left by hitting a jump shot in the lane. Senior guard Jess Bowen (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) closed out the quarter by hitting two three-pointers in the final minute.

Bethany pulled to within 66-64 but Bowen hit a jumper to double the lead with 1:11 left. Senior guard Jordan McConnell (Smithville, Ohio/Smithville) sealed the win by going 4 for 4 at the foul line in the final 49 seconds. 

Bowen led Grove City with 24 points. McConnell posted 11 points and Vezzosi recorded 10 points. Kimbrell added nine points. 

Freshman forward Kat Goetz (Pittsburgh, Pa./Avonworth) collected a team-leading nine rebounds for Grove City, helping the Wolverines own a 30-27 edge in that category. Podkul added six rebounds. 

Bowen tallied three assists while Goetz had three blocks and three steals. Vezzosi also had three steals. 

Grove City shot 24 of 55 (44 percent) from the field for the game while Bethany went 21 of 49 (43 percent). Grove City turned over the ball 20 times. Bethany had 24 turnovers. 

Makenzee Mason led Bethany with 17 points. Grove City led 21-16 after one quarter but Bethany forged a 36-36 tie by halftime. 

Grove City will host Saint Vincent (6-0) at 5:30 p.m. Monday in conference action. The winner will have the inside track to the No. 1 seed in the season-ending conference tournament.
