GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's lacrosse team opened its 2021 home schedule Saturday afternoon by dropping a 10-9 decision to visiting Saint Vincent at Robert E. Thorn Field. Saint Vincent broke a 9-9 tie with 2:49 left in regulation when Andrew Coholich scored an unassisted goal.
Four men posted multi-goal efforts for Grove City (1-1) as juniors
Brett Gladstone (Marriottsville, Md./Marriotts Ridge),
Michael La Forte (Waterford, Conn./Waterford) and
Jed Speers (Medina, Ohio/Medina) all scored twice, as did sophomore
James Petrolle (Damascus, Md./Damascus). Junior attack
Blaise Bishop (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) also scored.
Grove City trailed 6-4 in the third period but surged ahead with three straight goals. Bishop scored off La Forte's assist at 8:42, cutting the lead to 6-5. Petrolle then scored twice in a one-minute span to put the Wolverines ahead for the first time, 7-6, with 6:07 left in the period.
Saint Vincent's Jacob Visalli tied the game by scoring with 1:25 remaining in the third quarter. The teams then alternated goals in the fourth quarter. Gladstone and Speers both scored in the fourth quarter for Grove City.
Bishop, Petrolle and La Forte all recorded assists for Grove City. Junior
Grant Evans (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) won 19 of 22 faceoffs for the Wolverines. He also led Grove City with 17 ground balls. Speers added five ground balls. Senior
Patrick Mark (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla./Wellington) caused two turnovers.
Grove City outshot Saint Vincent, 47-33. The Bearcats owned a 23-21 edge in shots on goal, however. Grove City had 15 turnovers and Saint Vincent committed 13 turnovers.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Jack Petit (Pensacola, Fla./West Florida High School of Advanced Technology) made 13 saves for the Wolverines.
Visalli led Saint Vincent (2-0) with four goals.
Saturday's game does not count toward the Presidents' Athletic Conference standings. The teams will play their conference game March 31 at Saint Vincent.
Grove City will host Washington & Jefferson next Saturday at 1 p.m.
