Grove City edged twice by W&J

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team dropped a pair of 6-5 decisions Monday afternoon to visiting Washington & Jefferson (8-0, 6-0) in a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader at Jack Behringer Field.

W&J scored twice in the top of the seventh of Game One, a seven-inning game, to pull out the victory. In Game Two, the Presidents pulled ahead 6-5 in the top of the sixth and held on for the win.

In Game One, Grove City trailed 4-2 in the bottom of the sixth but rallied to take a 5-4 lead. Junior center fielder Joey Kolb (Riverside, Calif./Arlington) and sophomore third baseman Noah Cyphert (Kittanning, Pa./Armstrong) both scored on an error, tying the game. Senior second baseman Jesse Clary (Cranberry Township, Pa./Eden Christian) then put Grove City ahead when he doubled in junior pinch runner Matt Knauer (Allison Park, Pa./Eden Christian).

W&J left fielder Adam Morris tripled in Peter Kalinski with the tying run in the top of the seventh, then scored on Trevor Dean's sacrifice fly, however.

Clary went 2 for 3 for Grove City while sophomore catcher C.J. Saylor (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) led Grove City's 10-hit attack by going 3 for 4.

Senior pitcher D.J. Newby (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) started and pitched 3 1/3 innings. He allowed four hits and three earned runs. Freshman Nick Guidas (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine Richland) pitched 3 2/3 innings of relief. He struck out four and allowed three earned runs. Guidas took the defeat.

Grove City (4-4, 3-3 PAC) trailed 1-0 in the nightcap but took the lead with a four-run second inning. Kolb tied the game when his safety squeeze bunt brought home senior DH Bobby Abbott (Westfield, N.J./Westfield). Junior right fielder Colton Lineman (Pittsboro, N.C./Northwood) gave Grove City its first lead as he doubled in sophomore left fielder Anthony Tambellini (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour).

Clary then belted a two-run homer to left field, pushing the lead to 4-1. In the third inning, Tambellini singled in Saylor, giving Grove City a 5-2 lead.

Kalinski's three-run homer in the sixth put W&J ahead 6-5.

Saylor doubled as part of a 3-for-5 effort. Abbott doubled and singled for Grove City, which had nine hits.

Sophomore pitcher Calvin Burns (Canton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic) started and pitched 5 2/3 innings. He struck out four and allowed four earned runs. Senior Jacob Brothers (Aurora, Ill./Aurora Christian) took the loss in relief, allowing one run. Sophomore Austin Basham (Mansfield, Ohio/Lexington) pitched 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. Basham struck out one and permitted two hits.
