Grove City, SVC split

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team moved to 4-4 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference by splitting a home doubleheader Saturday afternoon with Saint Vincent at Jack Behringer Field. Grove City won the opener, 5-2, while Saint Vincent pulled out a 3-2 victory in the second game.

Junior pitcher Tate Ostrowski (Essex, Mass./Covenant Christian) fired a complete game for the Wolverines in Game One, earning his second win of the year. Ostrowski struck out nine men and allowed one earned run in seven innings. Ostrowski held Saint Vincent to four hits. Saint Vincent entered the game with a conference-leading .365 team batting average.

In the nine-inning nightcap, senior starter Lake Pry (West Sunbury, Pa./Moniteau) and freshman reliever Nick Guidas (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine Richland) combined to hold Saint Vincent to six hits. Pry struck out nine in seven innings. He allowed two earned runs and took the setback. Guidas pitched two hitless innings of relief.

Grove City jumped to a 2-0 lead in the opener as senior first baseman Bubba Hamilton (Garner, N.C./Waynesboro, Pa.) belted a two-run double in the first inning. Hamilton's hit drove in sophomore left fielder Anthony Tambellini (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) and sophomore catcher C.J. Saylor (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield).

The lead grew to 3-0 in the third inning when Saylor doubled in Tambellini. Grove City then added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Senior DH Bobby Abbott (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) scored on a fourth-inning double play and Tambellini scored on an error in the fifth.

Tambellini finished 3 for 3 and Saylor went 2 for 2. Grove City finished with seven hits.

Hamilton opened Grove City's Game Two scoring as his two-run single in the third inning brough home Tambellini and senior second baseman Jesse Clary (Cranberry Township, Pa./Eden Christian). That two-run single tied the game at 2-2.

Saint Vincent (5-3 PAC) scored an unearned run in the top of the eighth to break the tie, however.

Tambellini and senior DH Tanner Orner (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) both went 2 for 4. Grove City finished with seven hits.

Eight of Grove City's 10 games this season have been decided by one run or two runs.

Grove City will visit Saint Vincent for a doubleheader Monday at 1 p.m. Only the first game of the doubleheader will count in the conference standings.
