WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team dropped to 4-2 overall and 3-1 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference as the Wolverines dropped a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Washington & Jefferson. W&J pulled out a 4-2 win in the opener, then secured a 7-6 win in eight innings in Game Two at Ross Memorial Park. Only Saturday's first game counts toward the conference standings.
In Game Two, Grove City trailed 5-4 after six innings. However, senior first baseman
Bubba Hamilton (Garner, N.C./Waynesboro, Pa.) tied the game when he singled home junior right fielder
Joey Kolb (Riverside, Calif./Arlington).
Kolb then put Grove City ahead in the top of the eighth inning when he squeezed home junior center fielder
Matt Knauer (Allison Park, Pa./Eden Christian). However, W&J scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the eighth to secure the sweep.
Grove City jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first when sophomore DH
C.J. Saylor (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) cracked a two-run homer. The lead grew to 3-0 in the second when Kolb's infield hit scored Knauer.
Saylor singled in senior second baseman
Jesse Clary (Cranberry Township, Pa./Eden Christian) in the third inning, pushing Grove City's lead to 4-0.
Clary helped lead Grove City's 14-hit attack by going 3 for 3. Hamilton, Kolb, Saylor and senior shortstop
Bobby Abbott (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) all had two hits apiece. Knauer scored twice and stole a base.
Senior pitcher
Lake Pry (West Sunbury, Pa./Moniteau) started and struck out seven men in four innings. He allowed two hits and three earned runs. Freshman
Nate Hamel (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) allowed one earned run in 1 2/3 innings. Senior
Jacob Brothers (Aurora, Ill./Aurora Christian) allowed an unearned run in 1 1/3 innings. Sophomore
Austin Basham (Mansfield, Ohio/Lexington) took the defeat after allowing an unearned run in the eighth inning.
Grove City scored twice in the top of the seventh of Game One, a nine-inning conference game, to take a 2-1 lead. Saylor tied the game by singling in sophomore right fielder
Anthony Tambellini (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour). Freshman shortstop
Lucca Baccari (Irwin, Pa./Penn Trafford) put Grove City ahead when his single scored sophomore third baseman
Noah Cyphert (Kittanning, Pa./Armstrong).
W&J reclaimed the lead with three runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Cyphert doubled for Grove City while Abbott singled twice.
Junior pitcher
Tate Ostrowski (Essex, Mass./Covenant Christian) pitched into the seventh inning but took the setback. He allowed four earned runs in 6 2/3 innings. Ostrowski fanned four. Freshman pitcher
Nick Guidas (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine Richland) recorded the final four outs in relief.
Grove City will host W&J at 1 p.m. Monday in a conference doubleheader at Jack Behringer Field.
