WAYNESBURG, Pa. -- Strong pitching and timely hitting helped lift the Grove City College baseball team to a pair of victories Saturday afternoon at Presidents' Athletic Conference foe Waynesburg. The Wolverines captured a 4-2 win in the opener at Madison Park, then pulled out a 3-1 victory in the nightcap.
In Game One, senior starting pitcher
D.J. Newby (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) and freshman reliever
Nick Guidas (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) limited Waynesburg to eight singles over nine innings. Sophomores
Calvin Burns (Canton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic) and
Austin Basham (Mansfield, Ohio/Lexington) limited Waynesburg to one run and six hits in the second game.
Newby allowed one earned run and four hits in 5 1/3 innings, earning the win. Guidas pitched 3 2/3 innings for his first save. The left-hander recorded 11 total outs, eight by strikeout.Â
Grove City grabbed a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning of the opener. Junior right fielder
Joey Kolb (Riverside, Calif./Arlington) laced a two-run single that scored senior DH
Bobby Abbott (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) and senior second baseman
Jesse Clary (Cranberry Township, Pa./Eden Christian). Kolb then came home on a squeeze bunt by junior center fielder
Matt Knauer (Allison Park, Pa./Eden Christian).
Clary's fifth-inning groundout drove in sophomore left fielder
Anthony Tambellini (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) with Grove City's fourth run.
Abbott finished 3 for 4 while Tambellini doubled and singled. Sophomore catcher
C.J. Saylor (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) and senior first baseman
Bubba Hamilton (Garner, N.C./Waynesboro, Pa.) both doubledÂ
Grove City snagged a 2-0 lead in the second inning of Game Two. Sophomore third baseman
Noah Cyphert (Kittanning, Pa./Armstrong) drove in senior catcher
Tanner Orner (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) with a groundout to open the scoring. Abbott then came home when sophomore center fielder
Kaz Hoffman (West Middlesex, Pa./West Middlesex) singled.
Saylor scored on an error in the fifth for Grove City, which finished the game with six hits.Â
Burns pitched five shutout innings, allowing only four hits. He struck out five and walked one. Basham permitted one run in two innings to record the save, the third of his career.
Grove City (4-0, 3-0 PAC) will host Washington & Jefferson in a conference doubleheader Friday at 1 p.m. The Wolverines will then visit W&J for a twinbill next Saturday.
