Grove City opens with sweep

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team opened the 2021 season Wednesday afternoon by sweeping a doubleheader from visiting Waynesburg in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at Jack Behringer Field. The Wolverines won the opener, 2-1, then rolled to a 13-3 victory in Game Two.

Junior pitcher Tate Ostrowski (Essex, Mass./Covenant Christian) fired a complete game in the opener for Grove City. Ostrowski, who made his first collegiate start Wednesday, struck out 12 and allowed one earned run over seven innings. He permitted only four hits, earning his second career win.

Senior pitcher Lake Pry (West Sunbury, Pa./Moniteau) yielded one earned run and four hits as he pitched into the seventh inning of Game Two.

In the opener, Grove City broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the fifth when sophomore right fielder Anthony Tambellini (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) belted a leadoff home run. Tambellini earlier scored Grove City's first run of the game when he came home on a first-inning single by senior first baseman Bubba Hamilton (Garner, N.C./Waynesboro, Pa.).

Senior designated hitter Bobby Abbott (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) doubled as part of a three-hit performance for Grove City. Abbott scored three times and drove in three runs.

Freshman shortstop Lucca Baccari (Irwin, Pa./Penn Trafford) also doubled and added two singles. He drove in three runs. Meanwhile, Hamilton doubled.

Grove City opened the scoring in the first inning when sophomore catcher C.J. Saylor (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) scored on a throwing error. The Wolverines then added three more runs in the second inning.

Abbott scored on a bunt single by junior right fielder Joey Kolb (Riverside, Calif./Arlington) while Baccari later scored on Tambellini's sacrifice fly. Kolb then stole home as part of a double steal with Saylor.

Grove City broke open the game with four-run outbursts in the fifth and sixth innings. Sophomore third baseman Noah Cyphert (Kittanning, Pa./Armstrong) drove in Tambellini with a sacrifice fly, pushing the Wolverines' lead to 5-2. Abbott doubled in Hamilton while Baccari's two-run single brought in Abbott and senior second baseman Jesse Clary (Cranberry Township, Pa./Eden Christian).

In the sixth, Abbott cracked a two-run single and then scored on Baccari's double.

Freshman pitcher Nick Guidas (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) pitched 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. Sophomore Austin Basham (Mansfield, Ohio/Lexington) pitched a scoreless ninth inning.

Grove City will visit Waynesburg at noon Saturday for a conference doubleheader.
