STEUBENVILLE, Ohio -- A 40-point outburst in the second quarter helped lift the Grove City College women's basketball team to a 95-34 victory Saturday afternoon over host Franciscan in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at Finnegan Field House.
Freshman forward
Kat Goetz (Pittsburgh, Pa./Avonworth) posted 20 points on 9-of-10 shooting to help pace the Wolverines (6-0). She also pulled down 11 rebounds, recording her fourth double-double of the season.
Senior guard
Jess Bowen (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) added 14 points on 6-for-7 accuracy from the floor. Overall, 12 Grove City players scored in the win. All 15 Grove City players played at least eight minutes Saturday.
Grove City closed the first half on a 29-3 run on the way to a 53-12 halftime lead. Bowen sparked the run with a three-pointer while senior forward
Gretchen Elsey (Pulaski, Pa./West Middlesex) hit consecutive three-point goals. Goetz then scored nine straight points, pushing Grove City's lead to 44-12.
Sophomore guard
Emma Vezzosi (St. Mary's County, Md./Leonardtown) swished a three-pointer and classmate
Megan Kallock (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem) added a jumper. Senior guard
Lindsey Stanforth (Novelty, Ohio/West Geauga) helped close out the half with a pair of field goals.
Stanforth finished with nine points while Elsey, Vezzosi and senior guard
Lauren Frederick (New Wilmington, Pa./Wilmington) all contributed eight points.
Senior forward
Jessica Kimbrell (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) and junior forward
Allison Podkul (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) each tallied five rebounds. Grove City outrebounded the Barons, 57-26.
Bowen recorded four steals while Stanforth and Goetz each had three steals. Kallock, Kimbrell and Podkul all had three assists. Grove City had 16 turnovers and Franciscan had 25 turnovers.
Grove City shot 38 of 77 (49 percent) from the field for the game. The Wolverines held Franciscan to a 12-of-53 (23 percent) shooting performance for the game.
Angela Starre led Franciscan (1-4) with 10 points.
Grove City will visit Washington & Jefferson in conference action Wednesday at 7 p.m.
