Wolverines thunder past Westminster

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Four Grove City College women's basketball players scored in double figures Saturday afternoon to help lead the Wolverines to an 89-55 home win Saturday over Presidents' Athletic Conference rival Westminster at the Grove City College Arena. 

Junior forward Allison Podkul (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) and sophomore guard Megan Kallock (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem) both fired in 14 points for Grove City (4-0, 4-0 PAC) while sophomore guard Emma Vezzosi (St. Mary's County, Md./Leonardtown) posted 11 points. Senior guard Jess Bowen (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) chipped in 10 points.

Senior forward Gretchen Elsey (Pulaski, Pa./West Middlesex) and freshman forward Kat Goetz (Pittsburgh, Pa./Avonworth) each added nine points in the victory. Goetz also collected a team-leading 10 rebounds.

Grove City led 20-11 after one quarter and held a 22-16 advantage with eight minutes left in the half. The Wolverines broke open the game with a 23-3 run, sparked by a pair of Goetz baskets. 

Senior forward Jessica Kimbrell (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) followed with a jumper in the paint while Elsey hit consecutive field goals. Vezzosi's two free throws with 3:39 left pushed the lead to 36-17. Kallock scored five straight points while Kimbrell and senior guard Jordan McConnell (Smithville, Ohio/Smithville) closed the outburst with layups in the final minute.

McConnell finished with six assists while Vezzosi had five assists. Bowen recorded four assists and senior guard Lindsey Stanforth (Novelty, Ohio/West Geauga) tallied three assists. Grove City had 24 assists on 36 total field goals.

McConnell also had a team-leading four steals and Elsey had three steals. The Wolverines forced 29 turnovers while only turning over the ball 12 times.

Grove City shot 36 of 79 (46 percent) from the field for the game. Westminster went of 19 of 55 (35 percent). Westminster held a 43-42 edge in rebounds. 

Natalie Murrio led Westminster (3-2) with 14 points. 

The Wolverines will visit Thiel at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday in conference action.
