Eureka edges Wolverines

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team concluded 2021 Friday afternoon with an 85-81 setback against Eureka in the second day of action at the Cruzin' Classic, held at St. Thomas University. Friday's game featured eight ties and nine lead changes.

Junior guard Megan Kallock (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem) paced Grove City (5-4) with 24 points. Junior center Nina Cano (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) posted a career-high 16 points and freshman guard Clara Hannon (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) fired in a career-best 16 points.

Kallock hit two free throws with five minutes left to put the Wolverines ahead 76-71. However, Eureka held Grove City to one field goal the rest of the game, a Cano layup with 1:22 left. 

Senior forward Allison Podkul (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) added nine points and a game-high 11 rebounds for the Wolverines, who held a 45-39 edge on the glass. Cano and freshman guard Mara Polczynski (Irwin, Pa./Norwin) both had six rebounds. 

Hannon dished out four assists while Kallock, Podkul and Polczynski all recorded three assists. Podkul had four steals. Grove City forced 18 turnovers but committed 23 turnovers.

Grove City shot 28 of 69 (41 percent) from the field. Eureka converted 25 of 54 (46 percent) field goal attempts. Eureka went 31 of 44 (71 percent) at the foul line while Grove City sank 21 of 31 (68 percent) foul shots. The game featured 62 total fouls. Fifteen players had three or more fouls, including three disqualifications.

Olivia Falls led Eureka with 18 points. Eureka led 19-17 after one quarter while Grove City held a 42-35 lead at halftime. The Wolverines owned a 63-62 lead after three quarters.

Grove City returns to Presidents' Athletic Conference action Tuesday, January 4, 2022. That night, the Wolverines host Saint Vincent at 5:30 p.m. in the Grove City College Arena.
