BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- Led by a career-high 26 points Saturday afternoon from junior guard
Joshua McCray (Jessup, Md./Ashville College, U.K.), the Grove City College men's basketball team pulled out an 89-83 win over Lancaster Bible in the second day of action at Geneva College's Coaches vs. Cancer Classic in Metheny Field House.
McCray went 9 of 13 from the floor and 8 for 9 at the foul line in 19 minutes of action. McCray also added a career-high five steals. He earned All-Tournament Team recognition.
Senior center
Josh Brown (Enumclaw, Wash./Enumclaw) posted 10 points and freshman center
Christian Wiseman (Martinsville, Ind./Indian Creek) added a season-high 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting. Overall, 12 men scored for the Wolverines.
McCray drained a jumper with 16 minutes left to give Grove City its largest lead, 56-41. Lancaster Bible stormed back to take the lead, 65-64, with eight minutes left. Freshman forward
Russ Gump (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) put Grove City back on top with two free throws, however. On the Wolverines' next possession, freshman guard
Chase Yarberough (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) converted a three-point play.
Consecutive field goals from Brown and freshman forward Jaxson Weyforth (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) pushed the advantage to 73-65.
McCray went 4 for 4 at the foul line in the final 30 seconds and freshman guard
Jonah Bock (Erie, Pa./McDowell) added two free throws to sew up the victory.
Grove City shot 36 of 69 (52 percent) from the field for the game. Lancaster Bible finished 34 of 81 (42 percent) on field goal attempts.
Senior guard
Ben Rose (Helena, Ala./Helena) snared a game-high nine rebounds for Grove City (2-2) and Yarberough collected eight rebounds. Brown and Bock both had seven rebounds as the Wolverines held a 51-38 edge on the glass.Â
Bock and Rose both had three assists. Rose tallied three steals and blocked three shots. Sophomore forward
Sam Schudel (Stuttgart, Germany/Stuttgart) added two blocks.Â
Grove City turned over the ball 23 times while the Chargers had 17 turnovers. Grant Sareyka had 25 points for Lancaster Bible. The game featured seven lead changes and nine ties. Grove City led 41-37 at halftime.
The Wolverines will host Houghton at 5 p.m. Tuesday in non-conference play.
