Wolverines rally to topple Thiel in quarterfinals

GREENVILLE, Pa. -- The Grove City College volleyball team rallied from a 2-1 deficit Tuesday night to earn a five-set victory at No. 4 Thiel in the quarterfinal round of the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament at Rissell-Beeghley Gymnasia.

Fifth-seeded Grove City (19-11) secured a 25-19, 22-25, 14-25, 25-17, 15-11 triumph, which vaults Grove City into Thursday night's semifinals. The Wolverines will now face top-seeded Westminster at 7 p.m. in New Wilmington.

Sophomore Eloise Augustine (Lebanon, Ohio/Mars Hill) paced Grove City with a career-high 20 kills in Tuesday night's victory. Junior Faith Keating (Troy, Mich./Troy) posted 17 kills for the Wolverines. Augustine and Keating respectively recorded the final two kills of the match after Thiel had whittled Grove City's lead to 13-11 in the fifth set.

Freshman setter Kennedy Kerr (East Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) distributed 25 assists and classmate Katie Kenlein (Spokane, Wash./Lewis and Clark) added 15 assists. Freshman libero Mya Lathem (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/Woodridge) recorded 11 assists.

Sophomore Anna DeGraaf (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) paced the Grove City defense with four blocks. Keating and freshman Audrey Donnelly (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/Woodridge) each recorded three blocks. Donnelly played only one set in the two regular season matches against Thiel due to injury.

Lathem led the defense with 34 digs. Keating totaled 25 digs and Kenlein posted 20 digs. Kerr (14) and Augustine (11) also reached double figures in digs.

Grove City and Thiel both went 11-5 in conference play during the regular season but Thiel had home-court advantage due to sweeping the Wolverines. Grove City is now 2-2 in five-set matches this season.

No. 3 Chatham defeated No. 6 Geneva, 3-1, in Tuesday's other quarterfinal. Chatham will visit No. 2 Bethany in Thursday night's second semifinal. The semifinal winners will play for the conference title at the higher-seeded team's home facility.
