Grove City wins opener

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team opened the 2021-22 season Saturday afternoon with a 58-51 victory over visiting Penn State DuBois in non-conference action at the Grove City College Arena.

Grove City trailed 39-37 with 12:55 left but then held Penn State DuBois without a field goal for nearly 10 minutes. Grove City took the lead for good, 43-41, with nine minutes left when senior guard Ben Rose (Helena, Ala./Helena) drilled a pair of free throws. 

Sophomore forward Jon Weir (Venetia, Pa./Quaker Valley) followed with a layup and Rose hit two more free throws to give the Wolverines a 47-41 lead. A tip-in by junior guard Joshua McCray (Jessup, Md./Ashville College, U.K.) and a Rose basket capped the run.

Rose led Grove City with 17 points while Weir posted a career-high 10 points and seven rebounds.

Junior forward Elijah White (Zelienople, Pa./Portersville Christian) pulled down eight rebounds to help the Wolverines own a 61-32 edge on the glass. Rose added six rebounds, along with five assists.

Grove City shot 21 of 65 (32 percent) from the field for the game while Penn State DuBois hit 20 of 65 (31 percent) attempts. Penn State DuBois had 18 turnovers while Grove City turned over the ball 24 times.

Grove City led 31-22 at halftime. The Wolverines led by as many as 16, 27-11, in the first half before DuBois rallied.

Grove City will visit Franciscan at 8 p.m. Wednesday night in the Presidents' Athletic Conference opener.
