Turnovers costly in league opener

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio -- Three Grove City College men's basketball players scored in double figures Wednesday night in the Presidents' Athletic Conference opener at Franciscan but the visiting Wolverines dropped a 93-78 decision at Finnegan Field House.

Senior guard Ben Rose (Helena, Ala./Helena) paced Grove City (1-1, 0-1) with 15 points and junior forward Elijah White (Zelienople, Pa./Portersville Christan) posted 12 points. Freshman Ben Cano (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) added 11 points.

Grove City shot 49 percent (28 of 57) from the field for the game. However, Franciscan turned Grove City's 29 turnovers into 45 points Wednesday night.

Rose and freshman forward John Ward (Charlotte, N.C./Country Day) both pulled in six rebounds while sophomore forward Jon Weir (Venetia, Pa./Quaker Valley) added five rebounds. Grove City outrebounded the Barons, 52-32.

Rose added five assists while Ward assisted three field goals. Rose also had four steals. White blocked a pair of shots. 

Franciscan hit 34 of 80 (42.5 percent) field goal attempts, including a 17-of-35 performance behind the three-point line. Grove City went 2 for 13 on three-point attempts. 

Franciscan hit five three-pointers in the first six minutes in jumping out to a 19-8 lead. The Barons led by as many as 17 in the first half, 33-16, before Grove City whittled the lead to 43-37 late in the first half. Franciscan led 46-37 at halftime.

Justin Mack led Franciscan with 19 points. Franciscan finished with 10 turnovers.

Grove City returns to action Friday evening at Geneva, when the Wolverines face Albion in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic. Tip-off is 5:30 p.m. in Beaver Falls.
