Bats, Bini lead Grove City to sweep

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team improved to 7-3 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference by sweeping a conference doubleheader Tuesday afternoon from visiting Waynesburg (14-14, 8-6 PAC) at Jack Behringer Field.

The Wolverines produced 30 baserunners on their way to a 17-7 victory in the opener. In Game Two, senior pitcher John Bini (Staten Island, N.Y./Xaverian) fired a complete game to help lift Grove City to a 4-2 victory. Bini struck out seven men in his nine innings and became Grove City's all-time leader with 168 strikeouts.

Grove City (17-9 overall) grabbed an early 4-0 lead in the nightcap. Freshman left fielder Colton Lineman (Chapel Hill, N.C./Northwood) led off with a double and scored on a single by senior third baseman Micah Burke (Gilbert, Ariz./E.V.A.C.).

The Wolverines then added three runs in the bottom of the second inning. Lineman walked with the bases loaded, forcing in senior second baseman Bobby Dulay (Youngstown, Ohio/Ursuline). Junior first baseman Matt Dayton (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) then roped a two-run single that scored senior catcher Derek Boyle (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) and senior DH Travis Auth (Medina, Ohio/Medina). Auth and Lineman both finished 2 for 3 for Grove City.

Waynesburg scored single runs in the third and eighth innings against Bini, who held the Yellow Jackets to seven hits. He earned his 22nd career victory, which ranks second all-time in Grove City annals. Mike Herringshaw (2007-10) holds the program record with 23 victories.

Grove City produced 18 hits in Game One while also receiving four walks and seven hit batsmen. Auth helped break open the game with a three-run homer in the fifth while Lineman homered, singled and scored three runs. Dulay went 3 for 3 with three runs batted in while junior shortstop Bobby Abbott (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) also went 3 for 3 with a double.

Burke went 3 for 5 with three runs and senior center fielder Shane Hammel (Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge) added two hits. Abbott, Dayton, Dulay and Hammel all scored twice. Freshman right fielder Joey Kolb (Riverside, Calif./Arlington) tripled in the win while freshman Matt Lew (Redmond, Wash.) cracked a pinch-hit two-run single.

Dulay and Abbott both had run-scoring singles in the first inning to give Grove City a 2-0 lead. Auth's two-run single highlighted a three-run second inning for the Wolverines. Lineman led off the third with a homer, his second clout of the season. Dulay's two-run single in that inning helped the lead swell to 10-2 after four innings.

Waynesburg pulled to within 10-5 in the top of the fifth but Auth's three-run blast ignited a five-run fifth inning for Grove City. Burke later drove in Lineman and Abbott with a two-run single. Lew's single in the sixth scored Abbott and freshman pinch runner Tate Ostrowski (Essex, Mass./Covenant Christian).

Sophomore pitcher Lake Pry (West Sunbury, Pa./Moniteau) pitched five innings to earn the win. Pry (5-0) allowed four hits and five runs. Freshman Noah Sedmak (Falls Church, Va./Falls Church) pitched the sixth in relief while senior Phil Bell (Poland, Ohio/Heartland Christian) pitched a scoreless seventh.

Auth has 10 hits in his last 13 at-bats. Grove City's 17 runs are the most in a conference game for the Wolverines since April 27, 2016, when the Wolverines picked up a 22-7 win over Bethany.

Grove City will host Chatham in a single conference game Friday at 4 p.m. The Wolverines will then visit Chatham for a doubleheader Saturday afternoon.
