PITTSBURGH -- The Grove City College baseball team pounded out 20 hits Saturday afternoon in Game Two of its doubleheader at Presidents' Athletic Conference foe Chatham, vaulting the Wolverines to a 19-8 win at West Field. The win gave Grove City a split of the league twinbill after Chatham picked up a 7-5 victory in the opener.
Senior third baseman
Micah Burke (Gilbert, Ariz./E.V.A.C.) paced Grove City's onslaught by going 5 for 6 with two triples, two doubles, three runs scored and four runs batted in. He is the first Grove City player with a five-hit game since
Tyler Graham went 5 for 5 March 27, 2017 against Geneva.
Senior center fielder
Shane Hammel (Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge) tripled, doubled and drove in three runs as part of a 4-for-6 effort. Junior first baseman
Matt Dayton (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) went 3 for 5 with a bases-clearing triple and four runs batted in while senior DH
Bobby Dulay (Youngstown, Ohio/Ursuline) doubled twice and knocked in four runs.
Sophomore second baseman
Jesse Clary (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) and sophomore catcher
Tanner Orner (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) both had two hits and each also scored two runs. Freshman right fielder
Colton Lineman (Chapel Hill, N.C./Northwood) scored three times.
Dulay's two-run double in the first inning helped Grove City grab an early 3-0 lead. Dayton knocked in Clary with a second-inning sacrifice fly and Burke followed by tripling in Orner, pushing the lead to 5-1.
Grove City then broke open the game with an eight-run fourth inning. Burke, Dulay and Hammel all doubled in the inning to help ignite the outburst. Junior shortstop
Bobby Abbott (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) drove in Dulay with a sacrifice fly. Orner then singled in senior left fielder
Travis Auth (Medina, Ohio/Medina). Dayton then tripled down the right field line, scoring Lineman, Orner and Clary.
Dulay and Orner each hit sacrifice flies in the fifth. In the ninth, Grove City added four insurance runs. Abbott scored on a passed ball while Burke's two-run triple plated Dayton and Lineman. Hammel closed the scoring by singling home Burke.
Sophomore reliever
Joel Engstrom (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) earned the victory by pitching three innings out of the bullpen. Engstrom (4-0) allowed one earned run and one hit. Sophomore starter
Jacob Brothers (Aurora, Ill./Aurora Christian) allowed one earned run in 3 2/3 innings. Freshman
Isaac Bowden (Fairfax, Va./Lake Braddock) followed Brothers with 1 1/3 innings of relief. Sophomore
Lake Pry (West Sunbury, Pa./Moniteau) closed out the win by pitching a scoreless ninth.
Grove City (18-10, 8-4 PAC) bolted to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first of Game One. Lineman led off with a triple and then came in on Dayton's sacrifice fly. Burke followed with a triple and then scored on Hammel's single. Auth singled in Hammel with the third run while Abbott's two-out double brought in Auth.
Chatham pulled to within 4-3 in the fourth but Grove City answered in the top of the fifth when sophomore pinch runner
Matt Knauer (Allison Park, Pa./Eden Christian) scored on a passed ball. However, a four-run bottom of the fifth put Chatham ahead to stay.
Clary and sophomore
Bubba Hamilton (Waynesboro, Pa./Waynesboro) both doubled for the Wolverines.
Sophomore pitcher
D.J. Newby (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) pitched four innings and allowed three earned runs. He struck out three. Senior
John Bini (Staten Island, N.Y./Xavierian) pitched two innings of relief and took the setback.
Grove City and Chatham will complete their three-game series Monday with a single game at 4 p.m. at Jack Behringer Field. Friday's inclement weather postponed the game until Monday afternoon.
