WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team rallied for an 8-5 victory Monday afternoon at Washington & Jefferson (25-10, 19-2 PAC) in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at Ross Memorial Park. Coupled with Monday's other results around the conference, Monday's win qualifies Grove City (24-13, 14-7 PAC) for the season-ending, four-team conference tournament.
Grove City trailed 4-2 entering the fifth inning before surging ahead. Following a walk to senior catcher
Derek Boyle (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point), senior left fielder
Travis Auth (Medina, Ohio/Medina) roped a run-scoring triple that drove in Boyle.Â
Senior center fielder
Shane Hammel (Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge), senior DH
Bobby Dulay (Youngstown, Ohio/Ursuline) and sophomore second baseman
Jesse Clary (Cranberry Township, Pa./Eden Christian) all walked with the bases loaded to put Grove City ahead 6-4.
The Wolverines then added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh inning. Hammel doubled and later scored on a Dulay single. Dulay scored the second run of the inning when junior shortstop
Bobby Abbott (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) hit into a fielder's choice.
Dulay put Grove City up 2-0 in the top of the first inning when his bases-loaded single scored Hammel and senior third baseman
Micah Burke (Gilbert, Ariz./E.V.A.C.). Dulay finished 2 for 4 with four runs batted in while Burke also doubled.
Senior pitcher
John Bini (Staten Island, N.Y./Xavierian), this week's PAC Pitcher of the Week, fired a complete game for the Wolverines. He struck out four men over his nine innings. It is Grove City's conference-best 13th complete game of the season.Â
W&J has clinched the top seed in the conference tournament with its 19-2 league record. Grove City is second at 14-7, followed by Waynesburg (13-8), Bethany (14-10), Thiel (12-9) and Saint Vincent (11-10). Thiel and Waynesburg will play a three-game series this weekend. Grove City owns the head-to-head tiebreaker over both of those teams, as well as over Saint Vincent.
Grove City is 3-0 against both Waynesburg and Saint Vincent, 2-1 against Thiel and 1-2 against Bethany, which gives the Wolverines the advantage in any multiple-team tiebreaker situations. Saint Vincent cannot finish ahead of Grove City. Thiel or Waynesburg could finish ahead of the Wolverines, but both teams cannot finish ahead of Grove City due to their series this weekend.
Grove City will visit Geneva in conference play Friday afternoon. The Wolverines will host Geneva in a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday.
