Senior Day sweep for Grove City

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team concluded its home schedule Saturday afternoon by sweeping a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader from visiting Geneva at Jack Behringer Field. Grove City won the opener, 3-1, then picked up a 14-3 victory in Game Two. Grove City (26-13, 16-7 PAC) has set single-season program records for both regular-season victories as well as conference wins.

All seven of Grove City's seniors played roles in the doubleheader sweep. In Game One, senior second baseman Bobby Dulay (Youngstown, Ohio/Ursuline) doubled and scored while senior left fielder Travis Auth (Medina, Ohio/Medina) singled in a run and also scored. Senior third baseman Micah Burke (Gilbert, Ariz./E.V.A.C.) and senior center fielder Shane Hammel (Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge) also had singled in the win.

In Game Two, Burke helped lead Grove City's 18-hit attack by going 4 for 6 with a double and three runs batted in. Senior catcher Derek Boyle (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) doubled and drove in two runs while Auth added a double.

Senior pitcher John Bini (Staten Island, N.Y./Xaverian) earned his Grove City-record 27th victory by pitching 5 2/3 innings. He struck out three and allowed three unearned runs. Senior reliever Phil Bell (Poland, Ohio/Heartland Christian) followed by pitching 1 1/3 scoreless innings.

Grove City took a 1-0 lead in the opener as Dulay doubled and later scored on a single by freshman right fielder Colton Lineman (Chapel Hill, N.C./Northwood). Geneva tied the game in the top of the fourth but the Wolverines reclaimed the lead by scoring twice in the home half of the inning. Auth singled in junior shortstop Bobby Abbott (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) and later came in on a single by junior first baseman Matt Dayton (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton).

Sophomore pitcher Lake Pry (West Sunbury, Pa./Moniteau) earned the win by pitching six innings. Pry (7-1) allowed three hits and no earned runs while striking out four. Junior Austin Wacker (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) struck out two men in a perfect seventh inning, earning his second save of the season.

Abbott went 4 for 4 with three runs scored and three runs batted in during Game Two while sophomore first baseman Bubba Hamilton (Waynesboro, Pa./Waynesboro) went 3 for 4 and scored three runs.

The Wolverines took a 3-0 lead in the second inning as Lineman doubled in Hamilton, Boyle drove in Lineman with a sacrifice fly and Abbott scored on a groundout by sophomore second baseman Jesse Clary (Cranberry Township, Pa./Eden Christian).

Abbott's two-run single highlighted a four-run third inning for Grove City while Burke's two-run single in the fifth inning pushed the lead to 9-3. Boyle and Auth both doubled in runs during Grove City's four-run sixth inning while Abbott and Clary also knocked in runs. Clary closed the scoring in the eighth when he scored on a fielder's choice.

Sophomore pitcher D.J. Newby (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) closed out the win by pitching two scoreless innings of relief. He struck out four men, giving him a team-high 58 punchouts in 48 innings.

Grove City's senior class is the winningest in program history as the Wolverines have won 87 games over the last four years. As freshmen, the seven seniors helped Grove City to a program-record 27 wins and the ECAC Division III title in 2016.

The Wolverines will conclude the regular season Monday at Geneva. Grove City will be the No. 2 seed in next week's four-team conference tournament. The Wolverines will play No. 3 Waynesburg at 4 p.m. next Thursday in Washington, Pa.
