Bini sets wins record as Grove City rolls

WAYNESBURG, Pa. -- Grove City College senior pitcher John Bini (Staten Island, N.Y./Xaverian) fired a nine-inning complete game Wednesday afternoon to help lead the Wolverines to a 6-1 victory at Waynesburg in Presidents' Athletic Conference action. The win is Bini's 24th career victory at Grove City, giving him sole possession of the program record.

Wednesday's win also gives Grove City (23-11, 13-5 PAC) a three-game season sweep of Waynesburg (17-15, 11-7 PAC), as the Wolverines previously swept an April 9 doubleheader from Waynesburg.

Bini struck out six and walked one Wednesday in nine innings to improve to 4-3 on the season. He yielded eight hits while recording his fifth complete game of the season.

Eight men recorded at least one hit for the Wolverines. Senior catcher Derek Boyle (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) doubled and singled. Sophomore second baseman Jesse Clary (Cranberry Township, Pa./Eden Christian) batted leadoff for the first time in 2019 and went 2 for 3 with three runs scored.

Grove City took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Clary led off with a walk and later scored on an error. In the third, junior first baseman Matt Dayton (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) led off with a walk and then came home on a single by senior DH Bobby Dulay (Youngstown, Ohio/Ursuline).

Dayton doubled in the lead in the fourth inning when he laced a two-run double that scored Clary and sophomore left fielder Matt Knauer (Allison Park, Pa./Eden Christian). Grove City then added two more runs in the sixth inning as Clary singled in Boyle and later scored on a groundout by senior center fielder Shane Hammel (Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge).

Hammel also swiped a pair of bases in the win. Dayton walked three times and also reached on a hit batsman, boosting his on-base percentage to a team-high .464.

Grove City will visit Washington & Jefferson in conference play Friday at 4:30 p.m. The Wolverines will host W&J in a Saturday doubleheader.
