NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team dropped to 13-8 overall and 3-2 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Tuesday afternoon as Westminster pulled out a 13-11, 14-inning victory over the Wolverines. The teams began the game Friday afternoon in Grove City and played 11 innings before darkness halted the game.
Tuesday, Westminster scratched out two runs in the top of the 14th, then warded off a Grove City rally in the bottom of the inning. Grove City put the tying runs on base in the bottom of the 14th but could not extend the game.
Junior pitcher
Austin Wacker (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) struck out 10 men in 7 2/3 innings of relief. He pitched 4 2/3 innings Friday, then pitched all three after the game resumed Tuesday. He allowed five hits and three earned runs.Â
Sophomore starter
D.J. Newby (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) started the game and struck out eight in five innings. He allowed one run in seven innings. Sophomores
Jacob Brothers (Aurora, Ill./Aurora Christian) and
Joel Engstrom (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) pitched in relief. Overall, Grove City recorded 20 strikeouts in the game.
Senior third baseman
Micah Burke (Gilbert, Ariz./E.V.A.C.) and junior first baseman
Matt Dayton (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) both doubled and singled for the Wolverines. Burke scored three times and Dayton scored twice.Â
Freshman right fielder
Colton Lineman (Chapel Hill, N.C./Northwood) and freshman left fielder
Matt Knauer (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) both had two singles and scored twice. Senior center fielder
Shane Hammel (Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge) and junior shortstop
Bobby Abbott (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) each drove in three runs.Â
The suspended game marked the first for Grove City since March 24-25, 2017. The Wolverines defeated Geneva in 11 innings, 9-8, after darkness halted their March 24 game after 10 innings.Â
