Wolverines complete sweep of SVC

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team jumped out to a 12-0 lead Thursday afternoon on its way to a 12-7 victory over Saint Vincent in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at Jack Behringer Field. Coupled with Grove City's doubleheader sweep Wednesday at Saint Vincent, Thursday's win gives Grove City (22-10, 12-4 PAC) a three-game sweep of the Bearcats.

Sophomore second baseman Jesse Clary (Cranberry Township, Pa./Eden Christian) went 3 for 5 with two runs scored to help lead Grove City's 14-hit attack. Senior catcher Derek Boyle (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) drove in four runs while going 2 for 4. Junior shortstop Bobby Abbott (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) and freshman right fielder Colton Lineman (Chapel Hill, N.C./Northwood) both singled twice.

Grove City broke open Thursday's game by scoring seven runs in the second inning. Boyle opened the scoring with a two-run single that brought in Abbott and senior DH Bobby Dulay (Youngstown, Ohio/Ursuline). Clary scored the third run of the inning on a single by sophomore left fielder Matt Knauer (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton).

Boyle scored on an error to give Grove City a 4-0 lead. The lead quickly swelled to 6-0 when senior third baseman Micah Burke (Gilbert, Ariz./E.V.A.C.) roped a two-run double that scored Lineman and Knauer. Dulay's squeeze bunt brought Burke in with the seventh run.

The Wolverines then added five more runs in the fourth. Abbott singled home junior first baseman Matt Dayton (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton), giving Grove City an 8-0 lead. Burke and Dulay both scored on an error while Boyle followed with another two-run single. Abbott and Clary both scored on Boyle's hit.

Sophomore pitcher D.J. Newby (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) earned the victory by pitching 5 2/3 innings. He struck out four and allowed four earned runs. Sophomore Jacob Brothers (Aurora, Ill./Aurora Christian) pitched 2 2/3 innings of relief while classmate Joel Engstrom (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) recorded the final two outs in the ninth.

Winners of four straight, Grove City will host Bethany at 1 p.m. Monday in a conference makeup game.
