LATROBE, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team used a pair of complete-game pitching performances Wednesday afternoon to roll past homestanding Saint Vincent in both ends of a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader at Bearcat Ballfield.
Sophomore
Lake Pry (West Sunbury, Pa./Moniteau) fired a four-hit shutout in Game One to help lift Grove City to a 4-0 win. In Game Two, senior
John Bini (Staten Island, N.Y./Xavierian) went the distance in a 6-4 triumph for the Wolverines.
Pry struck out four and walked one in seven innings to earn his sixth win of the season. Bini started the nine-inning game of the doubleheader and allowed three earned runs and six hits in nine innings. He fanned six. Bini improved to 3-3 on the season and earned his 23rd career win. He now shares Grove City's career lead with Mike Herringshaw, who won 23 games from 2007 to 2010.
In Game One, Grove City (21-10, 11-4 PAC) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the fourth when senior second baseman
Bobby Dulay (Youngstown, Ohio/Ursuline) singled in senior third baseman
Micah Burke (Gilbert, Ariz./E.V.A.C.). Grove City then pushed the lead to 3-0 in the fifth as Burke singled in freshman right fielder
Colton Lineman (Chapel Hill, N.C./Northwood) and senior center fielder
Shane Hammel (Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge) drove in junior first baseman
Matt Dayton (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) with a single.
Senior catcher
Derek Boyle (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) capped the scoring in the seventh inning with a solo home run, his first collegiate round-tripper.
Hammel went 3 for 4 while Burke finished 2 for 3. Grove City handed Saint Vincent starter Jimmy Malone (5-1) his first loss of the season.
Grove City broke a 4-4 tie in Game Two by scoring twice in the top of the seventh. Burke tripled in Lineman to give the Wolverines a 5-4 lead. Burke then scored on Hammel's single to left field.
Burke also scored Grove City's run of the game when he scored on Dulay's fourth-inning single. Senior DH
Travis Auth (Medina, Ohio/Medina) boosted the lead to 2-0 by singling in Hammel. Dulay subsequently scored on a wild pitch, giving Grove City a 3-0 advantage. An infield single by sophomore catcher
Tanner Orner (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) brought home Hammel in the sixth inning.
Hammel finished the nightcap 3 for 5 while Dulay and Burke both had a pair of hits. Hammel and Lineman each swiped a pair of bases. As in the first game, Grove City dealt the Saint Vincent starter his first loss of the season as Casey Jones dropped to 6-1.
Grove City will host Saint Vincent at 1 p.m. Thursday in a single conference game at Jack Behringer Field.
