Grove City drops pair in Florida

KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- The Grove City College baseball team is now 2-4 on its Spring Break trip to central Florida after the Wolverines dropped a pair of decisions this week. Monday afternoon, Grove City fell to Albion, 7-2. The Wolverines then dropped a 3-2 decision Wednesday to Muhlenberg.

Wednesday, senior pitcher John Bini (Staten Island, N.Y./Xaverian) fired a complete game against Muhlenberg, holding the Mules to three runs and seven singles over eight innings. Bini struck out five men.

Grove City trailed 3-0 in the fifth inning before breaking through when freshman second baseman Matt Lew (Redmond, Wash.) scored on a groundout by freshman right fielder Colton Lineman (Chapel Hill, N.C./Northwood). In the sixth, Lew singled in senior third baseman Micah Burke (Gilbert, Ariz./E.V.A.C.). Lew finished the game 2 for 3. Muhlenberg held Grove City to three hits.

Monday against Albion, senior center fielder Shane Hammel (Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge) and sophomore second baseman Jesse Clary (Cranberry Township, Pa./Eden Christian) both doubled for the Wolverines. Lineman scored Grove City's first run in the third inning when he came home on an error. Burke scored on a passed ball.

Senior pitcher Phil Bell (Poland, Ohio/Heartland Christian) started for Grove City and allowed three runs in 3 1/3 innings. He took the setback. Freshman Isaac Bowden (Fairfax, Va./Lake Braddock) threw 3 1/3 innings of relief and also yielded three earned runs. Sophomore reliever Jacob Brothers (Aurora, Ill./Aurora Christian) retired all four batters he faced.

Grove City will face Penn State-New Kensington at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Auburndale, Fla.
