NUTTER FORT, W.Va. -- The Grove City College baseball team improved to 10-6 overall Friday night by earning a 13-5 win at NCAA Division II foe Salem University in non-conference action at Frank Loria Field.
Sophomore pitcher
Jacob Brothers (Aurora, Ill./Aurora Christian) improved to 3-0 overall by pitching five no-hit innings. He allowed one unearned run while striking out four. Brothers still owns a 0.00 earned run average for the season. He has allowed four hits in 21 innings this season.
Offensively, Grove City collected 12 hits and also took advantage of four Salem errors in the win. Junior shortstop
Bobby Abbott (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) went 3 for 4 with three runs scored to help pace the Wolverines. Sophomore DH
Bubba Hamilton (Waynesboro, Pa./Waynesboro) doubled, singled and drove in two runs while senior third baseman
Micah Burke (Gilbert, Ariz./E.V.A.C.) singled twice and knocked in a pair of runs.
Junior first baseman
Matt Dayton (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) doubled while freshman left fielder
Colton Lineman (Chapel Hill, N.C./Northwood) scored three times.
Salem scored an unearned run in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead but Grove City tied the game in the top of the second when Hamilton doubled in Abbott. Lineman scored the go-ahead run on Burke's third inning groundout.
Grove City then broke open the game with six runs in the fourth. Hamilton pushed the lead to 3-1 when he singled in Abbott. Sophomore catcher
Tanner Orner (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) scored when freshman right fielder
Joey Kolb (Riverside, Calif./Arlington) reached on a fielder's choice. Lineman singled in Hamilton, giving Grove City a 5-1 lead.
Dayton doubled in Kolb and after Lineman crossed home on a passed ball, Abbott singled in Dayton.
Salem pulled to within 8-5 in the eightH inning but Grove City sewed up the win with a five-run ninth. Sophomore second baseman
Jesse Clary (Cranberry Township, Pa./Eden Christian) singled in senior center fielder
Shane Hammel (Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge) with the first run of the inning. Lineman and Dayton both reached on errors while Clary scored on a balk. Burke then singled in Lineman with Grove City's 13th run.
Sophomore
Joel Engstrom (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) pitched three innings of relief for the Wolverines. Freshman
Isaac Bowden (Fairfax, Va./Lake Braddock) pitched a scoreless ninth inning.
Grove City will face Salem in a doubleheader Saturday, starting at 1 p.m.
