NUTTER FORT, W.Va. -- The Grove City College baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at NCAA Division II foe Salem (W.Va.) University. The Wolverines rallied for a 6-3, nine-inning win in the opener. Salem rebounded for a 6-5 win in Game Two.
In Game One, sophomore catcher
Tanner Orner (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) broke a 3-3 tie in the top of the ninth inning with a leadoff home run. The Wolverines (11-7) then added two insurance runs as senior pitcher/DH
Micah Burke (Gilbert, Ariz./E.V.A.C.) scored on an error and sophomore third baseman
Jesse Clary (Cranberry Township, Pa./Eden Christian) singled in senior center fielder
Shane Hammel (Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge).
Grove City trailed 3-0 after four innings but sophomore first baseman
Bubba Hamilton (Waynesboro, Pa./Waynesboro) launched a two-run homer in the top of the fifth. The Wolverines then forced extra innings when Clary's two-out single in the top of the seventh scored Hammel.
Burke also doubled while finishing 2 for 4. He started on the mound for the Wolverines and struck out seven over 6 1/3 innings. He yielded five hits and two earned runs. Junior reliever
Austin Wacker (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) earned the win after retiring all seven batters faced. He struck out three men.
In Game Two, Salem scored three times in the bottom of the seventh to pull out the win. Grove City jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning as Hamilton singled in Burke and Clary followed with a two-run single that brought home Hammel and junior shortstop

Senior catcher
Derek Boyle (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) closed the rally by driving in Hamilton with a sacrifice fly. The Wolverines had three hits in the first inning but managed only one more hit over the final six innings.Â
Sophomore pitcher
D.J. Newby (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) threw a complete game for Grove City, striking out 10 in 6 2/3 innings. He allowed five hits and three walks.Â
Coupled with Friday night's 13-5 win over Salem, Grove City took the weekend series with the Tigers.Â
Grove City hosts Thiel in a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Jack Behringer Field.
