Late rally foils Grove City

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team dropped a 5-2 decision Tuesday afternoon to visiting Hiram in non-conference action at Jack Behringer Field. Hiram broke a 2-2 tie by scoring three times in the top of the ninth inning.

Senior pitcher John Bini (Staten Island, N.Y./Xavieran) fired eight innings for the Wolverines, yielding only two runs and seven hits.

Offensively, junior shortstop Bobby Abbott (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) doubled and singled for the Wolverines while senior third baseman Micah Burke (Gilbert, Ariz./E.V.A.C.) also went 2 for 4. Freshman left fielder Colton Lineman (Chapel Hill, N.C./Northwood) also doubled for the Wolverines.

Grove City trailed 2-0 entering the bottom of the sixth before tying the game. Abbott singled in Burke to cut the lead to 2-1. Sophomore second baseman Jesse Clary (Cranberry Township, Pa./Eden Christian) then tied the game when his single scored junior first baseman Matt Dayton (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton).

Freshman Noah Sedmak (Falls Church, Va./Falls Church) and sophomore Joel Engstrom (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) both pitched in the ninth inning, with Sedmak taking the defeat.

Grove City had won each of its last three home openers. The Wolverines will visit Hiram for a 4 p.m. game Tuesday.
