WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team received a combined 15 innings from its two starting pitchers in Saturday's Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader at Washington & Jefferson but the Wolverines dropped both ends of the twinbill. W&J earned a 5-1 win in the opener, then secured a 2-0 victory in Game Two.
In the opener, junior pitcher
John Bini (Staten Island, N.Y./Xaverian) fired a complete game, striking out seven over eight innings. In the second game, freshman pitcher
D.J. Newby (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) limited W&J -- the defending national runner-up -- to two runs and three hits over seven innings.
Grove City out-hit W&J in the opener, 11-8, but did not break through until the ninth inning. Junior DH
Travis Auth (Medina, Ohio/Medina) blasted a double to right field and advanced to third on an error. The error allowed sophomore shortstop
Bob Abbott (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) to score.Â
Sophomore first baseman
Matt Dayton (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) led Grove City by going 3 for 4. Senior center fielder
Tyler Graham (Vandergrift, Pa./Kiski Area) doubled and singled while junior third baseman
Micah Burke (Gilbert, Ariz./E.V.A.C.) went 2 for 4.Â
Abbott, Dayton and Graham each had singles in Game Two for Grove City (12-18, 6-10 PAC). Both teams had only three hits. Freshman pitcher
Jacob Brothers (Aurora, Ill./Aurora Christian) pitched a scoreless eighth inning of relief for the Wolverines.
Grove City will visit Allegheny in non-conference play Monday at 4 p.m. in Meadville, Pa.
