Wolverines drop pair

CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. -- The Grove City College baseball team dropped both ends of a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Thomas More College. Thomas More pulled out a 7-6 win in 11 innings in Game One. The Saints then won the nightcap, 12-2.

In the opener, Grove City took a 6-5 lead in the top of the 11th when sophomore first baseman Matt Dayton (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) doubled in junior third baseman Micah Burke (Gilbert, Ariz./E.V.A.C.). However, Thomas More's Ben Laumann hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the 11th to give the Saints the win.

Grove City broke a scoreless tie in the fifth when Burke singled in sophomore shortstop Bob Abbott (Westfield, N.J./Westfield). Laumann tied the game with a run-scoring single in the bottom of the fifth but Grove City reclaimed the lead when freshman catcher Tanner Orner (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) scored on an error.

In the seventh, junior right fielder Shane Hammel (Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge) laced a two-run single that scored Dayton and freshman left fielder Jesse Clary (Cranberry Township, Pa./Eden Christian), pushing the lead to 4-1.

Thomas More forced extra innings but in the 10th, Abbott gave Grove City a 5-4 lead when he singled in freshman pinch runner Jared Conti (Hookstown, Pa./South Side Beaver). Sean Lawrence homered for Thomas More to tie the game in the bottom of the 10th, however.

Abbott helped pace Grove City by going 3 for 4 while Burke doubled and singled.

Sophomore pitcher Austin Wacker (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) started and struck out nine in seven innings. He allowed three earned runs. Freshman reliever D.J. Newby (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) pitched 3 1/3 innings and took the setback.

In Game Two, Thomas More scored in each of the first five innings to assert control. Grove City broke through in the ninth when Hammel scored on a single by senior second baseman Cameron Smail (Apollo, Pa./Kiski Area). Smail scored Grove City's second run on an error.

Junior DH Travis Auth (Medina, Ohio/Medina) doubled and singled for Grove City while Hammel went 2 for 4.

Sophomore pitcher Corey Thomas (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) made his first start of the season and allowed three runs in the first inning. Freshman Jacob Brothers (Aurora, Ill./Aurora Christian), junior Phil Bell (Poland, Ohio/Heartland Christian), freshman Joel Engstrom (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) and freshman Nick Chiodo (Solon, Ohio/Solon) all pitched in relief.

Grove City (11-13, 5-5 PAC) will host Bethany in a conference doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m. at R. Jack Behringer Field.
