GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team split a home Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon with Bethany at Jack Behringer Field. Grove City rallied from an early 7-0 hole in the opener to secure a 13-8 victory. Bethany took Game Two, 6-3.
Six Grove City players produced multiple-hit efforts in the opener and all nine starters either scored and/or drove in at least one run. Senior left fielder
Tyler Graham (Vandergrift, Pa./Kiski Area) paced Grove City by going 4 for 6 with a double while sophomore shortstop
Bob Abbott (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) went 3 for 4 with a double and three runs batted in.
Sophomore first baseman
Matt Dayton (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) doubled and singled while senior third baseman
Cameron Smail (Apollo, Pa./Kiski Area) finished 2 for 3. Freshman catcher
Tanner Orner (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) and freshman second baseman
Jesse Clary (Cranberry Township, Pa./Eden Christian) also had two hits each.Â
Bethany led 7-0 after the top of the second inning before Grove City stormed back. Abbott opened the scoring by driving in Dayton with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second, igniting a seven-run outburst.Â
Junior right fielder
Shane Hammel (Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge) scored on an error, cutting the lead to 7-2. Graham singled in Orner while Clary followed with a run-scoring single that scored sophomore center fielder
Austin Wacker (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley). An error scored Graham.
Dayton then lashed a game-tying two-run double that brought in junior pitcher
Micah Burke (Gilbert, Ariz./E.V.A.C.) and Clary.
Grove City took the lead in the bottom of the third as Smail roped a two-run single that scored Orner and Abbott. In the fourth, Orner drove in Hammel with a sacrifice fly and Graham then doubled in Abbott. Abbott singled in Burke and Dayton in the fifth inning.
Burke earned the win by pitching six innings. He allowed six earned runs and nine hits. Freshman
Jacob Brothers (Aurora, Ill./Aurora Christian) earned his first collegiate save by throwing three scoreless innings of relief. He struck out three and allowed one hit.
Four unearned runs helped Bethany take a 6-0 lead in Game Two. Grove City broke through in the seventh inning when junior second baseman
Bobby Dulay (Youngstown, Ohio/Ursuline) doubled in junior DH
Travis Auth (Medina, Ohio/Medina). In the ninth inning, Graham doubled in Auth and Clary then singled in Graham.Â
Dulay finished 3 for 4 while Clary also doubled.Â
Junior pitcher
John Bini (Staten Island, N.Y./Xaverian) allowed two earned runs over seven innings but took the setback. He struck out four and allowed seven hits. Freshman reliever
Joel Engstrom (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) pitched two scoreless innings of relief.Â
Grove City (12-14, 6-6 PAC) will host Westminster in a conference doubleheader Monday at 1 p.m.
