BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team moved to 5-3 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference by splitting a conference doubleheader Saturday at archrival Geneva.
Grove City (11-11 overall) received a two-hit shutout from junior pitcher
John Bini (Staten Island, N.Y./Xaverian) in the opener as the Wolverines rolled to an 11-0 win. Geneva took the second game, 6-3.
Bini struck out eight in recording his second complete game of the week and his fourth complete game of the season. Only two Geneva batters reached second base. It is Bini's 19th career win. His .864 (19-3) career win percentage is tops all-time at Grove City.
Offensively, the Wolverine broke open the first game with a five-run first inning. Sophomore first baseman
Matt Dayton (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) cracked a two-run double that scored senior left fielder
Tyler Graham (Vandergrift, Pa./Kiski Area) and freshman second baseman
Jesse Clary (Cranberry Township, Pa./Eden Christian).Â
Junior third baseman
Micah Burke (Gilbert, Ariz./E.V.A.C.) scored the third run of the inning on a groundout by junior right fielder
Shane Hammel (Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge). Later in the inning, freshman catcher
Tanner Orner (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) singled in Dayton and sophomore center fielder
Austin Wacker (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) drove in sophomore shortstop
Bob Abbott (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) with a single.
Auth pushed the lead to 6-0 in the third inning with a solo homer, his first clout of the season. Grove City then added four more runs in the fourth inning. Hammel scored on a wild pitch while Wacker's bases-loaded walk forced in Orner. Abbott came home on a Graham groundout. Clary closed the scoring with a two-run single that brought in Auth and Wacker. Clary, Graham and Orner all had two hits each for Grove City in the opener.
The 10-run mercy rule, used only for the first game of conference doubleheaders this season, halted the game after seven innings.Â
Geneva scored in each of the first two innings in Game Two to take a 2-0 lead. Grove City answered in the third inning, however, as Burke singled in Graham to cut the lead to 2-1. The Wolverines tied the game in the fourth when Hammel scored on a sacrifice fly by junior catcher
Derek Boyle (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point).Â
Geneva scored once in the bottom of the fourth, then added three more runs in the fifth inning. Wacker doubled in Abbott in top of the eighth to close Grove City's scoring.Â
Burke led Grove City's 10-hit attack by going 3 for 4 while Abbott added two hits. Burke started on the mound and allowed three earned runs in five innings. Freshman
Jacob Brothers (Aurora, Ill./Aurora Christian) pitched two innings of scoreless relief while sophomore reliever
Corey Thomas (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) pitched a scoreless eighth inning.Â
Grove City will visit conference rival Thomas More for a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at 1 p.m. in Crestview Hills, Ky.
