Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Robert Audia

Wolverines edged by Saints in OT

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's soccer team controlled possession for much of the game, but Thomas More gained momentum late in regulation and scored midway through the first overtime session as the Wolverines fell to the Saints 1-0 in their Presidents' Athletic Conference opener at College Field on Saturday afternoon.

Despite maintaining play in their offensive third for much of the first half, Grove City (5-4, 0-1 PAC) held just a 6-4 advantage in total shots before the break but did outshoot the Saints (6-3-1, 1-0) 5-1 on goal. After the break, play was more even, with each team having dangerous opportunities, but neither could capitalize, as the Wolverines headed to overtime for the second time in 2017.

However, just past the midway point of the overtime session, a Wolverine turnover allowed Abby Stadtmiller to carry a ball up the center of the field and play a long through ball ahead for Ashley Maples, who escaped past the Wolverine back line for a 1-v-1 with Wolverine senior goalkeeper Trisha Winters (Pittsburgh, Pa./Hampton) and beat Winters inside the left post for the game-winning goal.

Winters made four saves in goal for the Wolverines. For the match, the Saints outshot the Wolverines 18-15, but Grove City held a 7-5 edge in shots on goal.

Grove City returns to action on Wednesday, hosting Chatham at 4 p.m. in league play.
