GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Miscues were the story of the day as the Grove City College baseball team committed nine errors in a pair of losses to No. 21 Washington & Jefferson in Presidents' Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon. The Wolverines (9-12, 6-5 PAC) dropped the opener 14-2 before falling 15-1 in the nightcap.
Senior first baseman
Matt Waugaman (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) posted four hits on the day, driving in both of Grove City's runs in the opener to lead the Wolverines offensively.
In the opener, the Presidents (15-3, 10-0) scored twice in both the first and third innings to jump out to a 4-0 lead. Grove City got on the board in the bottom of the third when junior outfielder
Tyler Graham (Vandergrift, Pa./Kiski Area) hit a leadoff single and came home to score when Waugaman followed with a double. However, the Wolverines couldn't get Waugaman home to further cut into the deficit.
W&J added four runs in the fifth and sixth and two more in the seventh to extend their lead to 14-1. Waugaman singled home junior second baseman
Cameron Smail (Apollo, Pa./Kiski Area) in the bottom of the seventh to close the scoring.
Freshman
Austin Wacker (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) took the loss on the mound, allowing eight hits and seven earned runs while striking out five over four and two-thirds innings. Freshman
Henry Womble (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) and senior
Cedric Hils (West Homestead, Pa./Central Catholic) both appeared relief. Waugaman went 3-4 with a double and two RBIs while Graham and senior catcher
Andy Fritz (Saxonburg, Pa./Knoch) each added two hits.
In the second game, the Presidents score one run in the first and three in the third before breaking the game open with nine runs -- all unearned -- in the third to lead 13-0. Sophomore infielder
Bobby Dulay (Youngstown, Ohio/Ursuline) singled to lead off the bottom of the third and came home to score on a double by sophomore third baseman
Micah Burke (Gilbert, Ariz./E.V.A.C.) to give Grove City it's lone run.
Sophomore
John Bini (Staten Island, N.Y./Xaverian) suffered his first collegiate loss in 21 appearances, allowing 10 hits and 13 runs (four earned) in three innings of action. Senior
Jimmy Palmer (Medina, Ohio/Medina) allowed just two hits and two unearned runs in three innings of relief while freshman
Corey Thomas (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) threw a scoreless seventh.
Grove City returns to action Monday, visiting W&J to complete the series with a single nine-inning game at 4:30 p.m.
