Game Recap: Baseball |

Grove City falls at Thiel

GREENVILLE, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team dropped both ends of a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Thiel. Thiel pulled out a 3-1 win in the opener and then secured a 4-3 Game Two victory in eight innings at Tomcat Park.

In Game Two, Grove City trailed 3-1 in the top of the seventh but sophomore Travis Auth (Medina, Ohio/Medina) blasted a game-tying, pinch-hit two-run homer with one out.

In the bottom of the eighth, Thiel broke the 3-3 tie when Grove City committed a throwing error while trying to complete an inning-ending double play with the bases loaded.

Grove City (8-9, 5-2 PAC) trailed 3-0 entering the sixth but junior left fielder Tyler Graham (Vandergrift, Pa./Kiski Area) led off with a single and later scored on a groundout by senior catcher Andy Fritz (Saxonburg, Pa./Knoch).

Senior shortstop David Laylock (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pine-Richland) went 2 for 4 while sophomore right fielder Shane Hammel (Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge) added a double.

Sophomore pitcher Micah Burke (Gilbert, Ariz./E.V.A.C.) pitched seven innings for Grove City, allowing three earned runs. He struck out three and did not walk a batter. Sophomores Derek Boyle (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) and Phil Bell (Poland, Ohio/Heartland Christian) both pitched in relief with Boyle taking the setback.

Grove City grabbed a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning of the opener as senior right fielder Nolan Myers (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) singled in senior first baseman Matt Waugaman (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny). Thiel tied the game in the fourth, then scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to pull ahead.

Myers went 2 for 3 while Waugaman doubled. Freshman pitcher Austin Wacker (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) pitched a complete game, striking out seven men in six innings. He allowed two earned runs and five hits.

Grove City will host Thiel at 4 p.m. Monday in a single conference game at R. Jack Behringer Field.
