Sweep vaults Grove City into 1st

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team moved into first place in the Presidents' Athletic Conference by sweeping a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon from visiting Bethany at R. Jack Behringer Field.

In Game One, Grove City earned a 3-2 win in eight innings on a game-winning solo home run by senior catcher Andy Fritz (Saxonburg, Pa./Knoch). Grove City then secured a 4-2 victory in the nightcap. The Wolverines (8-7 overall) have won five straight games and are atop the conference with a 5-0 league record.

Fritz gave Grove City a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the opener when he singled in senior first baseman Matt Waugaman (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny), who had doubled with two outs.

Bethany tied the game in the top of the fourth but the Wolverines reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the inning when senior right fielder Nolan Myers (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) scored on a single by sophomore second baseman Bobby Dulay (Youngstown, Ohio/Ursuline).

Bethany again tied the game with an unearned run in the seventh. Fritz led off the bottom of the eighth for Grove City. After fouling off several pitches, he belted his second clout of the season to left field.

Sophomore pitcher John Bini (Staten Island, N.Y./Xaverian) pitched the first seven innings for Grove City, allowing no earned runs. He struck out one and did not walk a man. Freshman Austin Wacker (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) pitched the eighth and earned the win, his team-high third of the season.

Bethany (5-9-1, 0-4 PAC) took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning of the nightcap but Grove City quickly countered with a pair of runs. Myers singled in Fritz with Grove City's first run. Freshman DH Matt Dayton (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) scored the tying run on a sacrifice fly by sophomore third baseman Micah Burke (Gilbert, Ariz./E.V.A.C.).

In the sixth, Myers scored the go-ahead run on an error. Burke later drove in sophomore left fielder Travis Auth (Medina, Ohio/Medina) to close the scoring.

Fritz finished 2 for 3 for Grove City, which out-hit Bethany, 7-5. The game featured no extra-base hits.

Sophomore reliever Phil Bell (Poland, Ohio/Heartland Christian) earned the win by pitching two perfect innings. He struck out two men. Senior Ben Finlan (State College, Pa./State College) started and allowed two earned runs and five hits over five innings.

Grove City will host Thiel at 4 p.m. Friday in conference play. The Wolverines will then play a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Thiel to complete the teams' three-game series.
