Bats come alive as Wolverines sweep Geneva

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team exploded for 25 total hits and 20 runs as the Wolverines followed up the completion of Friday's suspended game with Geneva by defeating the Golden Tornadoes 13-0 and 7-2 to complete the season-sweep on Saturday afternoon in their 2017 home opener at R. Jack Behringer Field.

According to all available records, Saturday's three-game sweep of Geneva (6-11, 0-3 PAC) marks the first time in program history that the Wolverines (6-7, 3-0 PAC) have won three games on the same day.

Senior first baseman Matt Waugaman (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny), who missed much of the early part of the season due to injury, made his presence felt in a big way by going 3 for 5 with two home runs, a double, seven RBI and three runs scored in the opener while junior outfielder Tyler Graham (Vandergrift, Pa./Kiski Area) was a perfect 5 for 5 in the opener with a pair of doubles, four runs and an RBI. Senior shortstop David Laylock (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pine Richland) also had a strong day at the plate, recording a pair of hits in each game while driving in three total runs, while senior catcher Andy Fritz (Saxonburg, Pa./Knoch) went 3 for 3 with a pair of doubles in the first game.

In the opener, freshman Austin Wacker (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley), who earned the save in the completion Friday's suspended game, pitched six strong innings on the mound to earn the victory, allowing just two hits while striking out six before freshman Corey Thomas (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) threw a strong, four-out bottom of the seventh in relief. Wacker is the first Wolverine pitcher in at least 18 years to earn both a save and a victory on the same day.

Grove City jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first game as Graham hit a one-out single and Waugaman followed with a two-run home run to right center field. The homer was Waugaman's first of the season and the 20th of his career.

The Wolverines doubled their lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the third, as Graham singled again and later scored on a wild pitch while senior right fielder Nolan Myers (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) singled to score Fritz. They then added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth, as Waugaman hit a two-run double to score both Laylock and Graham, and Fritz followed with a double to the base of the center-field fence to score Waugaman and push the lead to 7-0.

A five-run bottom of the fifth for Grove City would put the game out of reach. Laylock hit an RBI-single to score sophomore third-baseman Micah Burke (Gilbert, Ariz./EVAC) and Graham followed with his second double of the game to score sophomore infielder Bobby Dulay (Youngstown, Ohio/Ursuline) before Waugaman drilled his second home run of the game to right center field to give the Wolverines a commanding 12-0 lead.

Grove City added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when Dulay doubled and Laylock brought him home with an RBI-single.

In the nightcap, Grove City once again jumped out to a lead in the first inning, as Laylock singled and Graham and Waugaman both walked to load the bases. A Fritz RBI-sacrifice fly advanced all three runners, scoring Laylock, and a Golden Tornado error allowed Graham to continue home to give the Wolverines a 2-0 lead. A single by freshman designated hitter Matt Dayton (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) moved Waugaman to third, and Myers and sophomore outfielder Shane Hammel (Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge) each folowed with RBI-singles to extend Grove City's first-inning lead to 4-0.

Geneva would get on the board in the top of the third as designated hitter Joey Luciana hit a two-run home run to left field, but Burke settled back in on the mound, escaping a jam in the third and another in the fourth to keep the Wolverine lead at 4-2.

After Burke worked out of another jam in the top of the sixth, Grove City added some insurance in the bottom half by plating three more runs. Dayton led off the inning with a double, and pinch runner Travis Auth (Medina, Ohio/Medina) advanced to third on a wild pitch. It appeared as if Auth might be stranded after a pair of strikeouts, but Wacker drew a walk and then stole second to give Grove City a pair of runners in scoring position. Dulay then hit a double just inside the right field line and off the glove of a diving Geneva outfielder, and Laylock sent Dulay home with a single to give the Wolverines a 7-2 advantage through six.

That would be enough, as sophomore Derek Boyle (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) faced the minimum in the top of the seventh after a Geneva baserunner ran into a double-play.

Burke improved to 2-0 on the year on the mound, scattering nine hits over six innings while striking out three and walking a pair.

Graham's five-hit game in the first of the doubleheader is the first for Grove City since Scott Moran went 5 for 6 at La Roche on March 18, 2011. It's the first time a Wolverine has gone a perfect 5 for 5 since Zach Butler did so in a 22-7 home win over Saint Vincent on April 7, 2010.

Grove City returns to action Tuesday, hosting Bethany in a 1 p.m. conference doubleheader.
