GROVE CITY, Pa. -- It took two days, two fields and 11 innings, but the Grove City College baseball team earned a victory in its Presidents' Athletic Conference opener over archrival Geneva, 9-8, Saturday afternoon.
The game started Friday afternoon at Geneva but darkness suspended the game after 10 innings with the game tied 8-8. The teams completed the suspended game prior to their scheduled conference doubleheader Saturday at Grove City's R. Jack Behringer Field.
In the top of the 11th, sophomore third baseman
Micah Burke (Gilbert, Ariz./E.V.A.C.) belted a double to left center that drove in sophomore pinch runner
Travis Auth (Medina, Ohio/Medina) with the go-ahead run. Auth ran for freshman DH
Matt Dayton (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton), who opened the 11th with a walk.
Freshman center fielder
Austin Wacker (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley), Grove City's scheduled Game One starting pitcher for Saturday, secured his first collegiate save by pitching a scoreless bottom of the 11th. Wacker struck out two. Senior reliever
Cedric Hils (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) earned the victory.
Sophomore pitcher
John Bini (Staten Island, N.Y./Xaverian) started Friday and allowed three earned runs in 7 1/3 innings. Sophomore
Phil Bell (Poland, Ohio/Heartland Christian) pitched a scoreless inning of relief while sophomore
Derek Boyle (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) and Hils followed.
Grove City took an 8-6 lead in the top of the 10th as sophomore second baseman
Bobby Dulay (Youngstown, Ohio/Ursuline) and senior shortstop
David Laylock (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pine-Richland) both singled and scored after two outs. An error and a wild pitch allowed Dulay and Laylock to respectively score.
Geneva tied the game in the bottom of the 10th and had the winning run on base with one out but Hils worked out of the jam.
Dulay led Grove City's nine-hit attack with a career-high three hits, including a double. Laylock scored twice.
Grove City hosts Geneva in the teams' scheduled doubleheader Saturday afternoon. The doubleheader opens a five-game homestand for Grove City.
