Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Grove City ousts W&J, 2-1

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's soccer team pulled out a 2-1 victory Tuesday afternoon over visiting Washington & Jefferson in the semifinal round of the 2017 Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament at College Field.

The victory -- Grove City's 10th straight -- sends the second-seeded Wolverines (15-4) into this weekend's conference title match at No. 1 seed Thomas More. Thomas More defeated No. 4 seed Chatham in Tuesday's other semifinal, 2-1, in Crestview Hills, Ky.

Grove City broke a 1-1 tie at 86:33 when freshman forward Michaela Burke (Gilbert, Ariz./Gilbert Christian) headed in a throw-in from sophomore midfielder Ruby Mattson (Dallas, Pa./Dallas). Burke recorded her second game-winning goal of the season and her seventh overall goal.

Mattson gave Grove City a 1-0 lead at 37:32 when she scored from just outside the penalty area. Senior forward Katherine Kouzelos (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) assisted Mattson's goal. Mattson now has eight goals this season.

W&J, the No.3 seed in the four-team tournament, forged a 1-1 tie at 40:41 when Ashton Grimm scored an unassisted goal.

In goal, senior Trishae Winters (Pittsburgh, Pa./Hampton) made a season-high 10 saves for Grove City. She preserved the 1-1 tie in the 75th minute when she stuffed W&J's Jordan Toohey -- the conference's leading scorer -- from point-blank range.

W&J had 21 shots while Grove City recorded 13 shots. W&J held a 5-2 edge in corner kicks. The Presidents had won seven straight matches prior to Tuesday.

Grove City is now 3-0-2 against W&J in the last five postseason meetings, all of which have been in the semifinal round.

The site, date and time of the tournament championship match against Thomas More will be announced Wednesday after the conclusion of the men's tournament semifinals.
