GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's soccer team scored five goals in a 27-minute span during the second half Wednesday afternoon, helping the host Wolverines earn a 6-1 win over archrival Geneva in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at rain-soaked College Field.
Grove City broke a 1-1 tie at 52:31 when junior defender
Krista Heckman (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) drilled a shot into the goal from 30 yards out, giving the Wolverines a 2-1 lead. Seventy seconds later, sophomore midfielder
Ruby Mattson (Dallas, Pa./Dallas) scored the Wolverines' third goal of the afternoon when she dribbled into the penalty area and blasted the ball past Geneva goalkeeper Dani Lincoln.
The lead grew to 4-1 at 65:36 when senior forward
Katherine Kouzelos (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) received a pass from senior forward
Elena Guerra (Arlington, Texas/Nolan Catholic) and scored from the top of the penalty area. Kouzelos grabbed a share of the team lead in scoring with the goal, her fourth of the season. Guerra now has a team-best four assists this year.
Senior defender
Megan Van Kirk (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) pushed the lead to 5-1 at 73:51 with an unassisted goal. Freshman forward
Katherine Reese (Rocky Hill, Conn./Loomis Chaffee) closed the scoring at 79:00 when she tallied her first collegiate goal. Sophomore midfielder
Morgan Vensel (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) assisted Reese's goal.
Grove City (8-4, 3-1 PAC) grabbed the lead 35 seconds into the match when Guerra scored from the right wing. Mattson supplied the assist. Geneva (4-8, 1-3 PAC) tied the match at 39:22 on April Mann's penalty kick after a Grove City foul in the box.Â
In goal, senior
Trishae Winters (Pittsburgh, Pa./Hampton) stopped seven shots to record the victory. Grove City owned a 28-11 edge in shots and a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Grove City will host Bethany in conference action Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. It will be Senior Day for Grove City.
