No. 23 Cortland holds off Grove City

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College football team opened its 132nd season of play Saturday afternoon by dropping a 28-18 home decision to No. 23 Cortland in non-conference action at Robert E. Thorn Field.

Sophomore quarterback Mike Hollomon (Princeton, N.J./The Pingry School) threw for 276 yards and two touchdowns in his first collegiate start. He completed passes to eight different receivers and finished 20 of 40. 

Senior wide receiver Daniel Sullivan (Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) caught four passes for a team-leading 69 yards while junior wide receiver Sam Penna (Johnstown, Pa./Richland) had six catches for 48 yards. Both men caught touchdown passes. 

Penna caught a 14-yard touchdown pass from Hollomon with 12:41 left, cutting Cortland's lead to 28-10. On the Wolverines' next possession, Hollomon fired a 47-yard scoring strike to Sullivan. Hollomon then scored the two-point conversion, trimming the lead to 28-18 with 8:33 left. 

Grove City drove to the Cortland 34 on its next possession but Cortland cornerback Nazair Jean-Lubin intercepted a bobbled pass to preserve the Red Dragons' lead with 2:44 left in the game.

Cortland took a 7-0 lead with 7:13 left in the first quarter on Ethan Gallo's 28-yard run. Quarterback Mike Rescigno scored on an 11-yard run later in the period then added a 3-yard scoring run 2:20 into the second half.

Grove City sophomore kicker Brady Lane (Jefferson, Ga./Mill Creek) drilled a 34-yard field goal on Grove City's first possession of the second half, opening the Wolverines' scoring. 

Senior running back Chase Rankin (Coventry Township, Ohio/Coventry) led Grove City with 83 yards on 26 carries. Grove City finished with 359 yards while Cortland totaled 435 offensive yards. 

Junior linebacker Danny Franco (Mars, Pa./North Catholic) led Grove City with 12 tackles. Junior safety Mason Clouse (Templeton, Pa./Redbank Valley) added nine stops.

Rescigno threw for 180 yards and ran for 83 yards. Gallo rushed for 106 yards. Cortland held a 32:35-27:25 edge in time of possession.

Grove City opens its road schedule next Saturday at Mount Union. Kickoff will be 1:30 p.m. in Alliance, Ohio.
