Grove City drops tourney opener

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Freshman third baseman Nick Remish (Norristown, Pa./Methacton) belted a solo home run while senior pitcher Kenny Lavrich (Franklin, Pa./Cranberry) fired seven innings Wednesday afternoon as the Grove City College baseball team dropped a 5-1 decision at Washington & Jefferson in the opening round of the Presidents' Athletic Conference Tournament at Ross Memorial Park.

Fifth-seeded Grove City will now face top-seeded Westminster in an elimination game Thursday at 11 a.m. Westminster fell to No. 6 Chatham in the tournament's first game, 9-0.

Remish pulled the Wolverines into a 1-1 tie in the top of the third when he led off the inning with a home run. Second-seeded W&J reclaimed the lead with two runs in the bottom of the inning.

Senior second baseman Nick Sampson (Venetia, Pa/Peters Township) and senior first baseman Colin Marinpetro (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny) both singled for Grove City.

Lavrich (5-4) struck out six men in seven innings. He walked one while allowing four earned runs. Freshman Graham Romer (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) pitched a scoreless eighth inning in relief.

The Grove City-Westminster game will be a rematch of the 2025 conference tournament championship game, won by the Wolverines.
