Grove City pulls away for conference crown

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- A seven-goal fourth quarter Saturday night helped the Grove City College men's lacrosse team break open its Presidents' Athletic Conference Tournament title game with visiting Chatham as the Wolverines earned a 17-6 win at Robert E. Thorn Field. 

Grove City (13-7) led 7-3 at halftime and carried a 10-4 lead into the final period. Chatham cut the lead to 10-5 a dozen seconds into the fourth quarter but Grove City countered with three goals in a two-minute span. Freshman midfielder Zach Moravec (West Chicago, Ill./Wheaton Academy) ignited the spurt by scoring at 13:43 after receiving an assist from senior attack Rigdon Greene (Marietta, Ga./Pope). 

Sophomore midfielder Ethan Binns (Saint Johns, Fla./The Bolles School) followed with a man-up goal at the 12:02 mark, giving Grove City a 12-5 lead. Thirty-two seconds later, another Greene assist led to a goal from senior attack Mac Faircloth (Greensboro, N.C./Page).

Faircloth, the tournament's Most Outstanding Player, scored his fifth and final goal of the game with 9:32 remaining. Junior midfielder Tyson Bui (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton), freshman attack Jake Parker (Edgewater, Md./St. Mary's Annapolis) and freshman midfielder Tucker Saums (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest Guilford) added goals in the final four minutes to cement the victory.

Binns, Bui, Saums and junior midfielder Breck Peacock (Wayne, Ill./Wheaton Academy) all scored twice. Junior attack Davis Schneider (Winfield, Ill./Wheaton Academy) and senior defender Sam Stevenson (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove) also scored for Grove City, which earned its 11th straight victory.

Binns and Greene both had two assists. Stevenson also had an assist, as did junior midfielder Josh McDermott (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./Santa Margarita), freshman attack Owen Edkins (Liberty Township, Ohio/Lakota East) and freshman midfielder Alex Gladstone (Marriottsville, Md./Marriotts Ridge). 

Peacock and Stevenson both caused two turnovers. Senior defender Andrew Glasgow (Wooster, Ohio/Wooster), senior defender Samuel Busby (Doswell, Va./Patrick Henry) and junior defender Ian Martti (Greensboro, N.C./Page) also caused two turnovers apiece. 

Senior Colton Lehberg (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Santa Fe Christian) won 14 of 19 faceoffs and led the Wolverines with 12 ground balls. Senior goalie Tyler Gladstone (Marriottsville, Md./Marriotts Ridge) had eight ground balls and Stevenson collected five ground balls. 

Tyler Gladstone made five saves in 58 minutes of action. Junior Kyle Gill (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) played the final two minutes and did not face a shot. Grove City outshot Chatham, 55-31. Chatham had 27 turnovers while Grove City committed 24 turnovers.

The Wolverines have now won seven consecutive conference titles. Grove City also earned its seventh straight NCAA Division III Tournament berth by winning the conference. The NCAA Tournament field will be announced Sunday at 9 p.m.
