Grove City earns split Wednesday

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team split a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader Wednesday afternoon and evening at longtime rival Westminster. Grove City earned a 6-1 win in the nightcap after the hosts pulled out a 7-3 victory in the lidlifter.

Grove City (14-5, 6-3) trailed 1-0 after four innings in Game Two before rallying for the win. Freshman shortstop Lily Meidl (Pataskala, Ohio/Licking Heights) tied the game by singling in sophomore pitcher Alivia Lantzy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Avonworth) in the fifth. Grove City then took the lead in the sixth inning when freshman first baseman Cora Myers (Blanchard, Pa./Central Mountain) belted a double to center field that scored Lantzy.

Senior center fielder Noel Anthony (Clarion, Pa./Clarion) pushed the lead to 3-1 in the top of the seventh inning when she singled in Meidl. Lantzy then broke open the game by lacing a three-run triple that scored Anthony, junior second baseman Abby Stouffer (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) and freshman DP Zoey Lindner (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk).

Myers led Grove City's 14-hit attack by going 3 for 5. Lindner and Meidl both went 2 for 3 while Lantzy went 2 for 4. Junior left fielder Evelyn Montone (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) singled twice.

Lantzy (7-1) earned the pitching win by throwing a complete game. She struck out seven while allowing one run and four hits.

Grove City outhit Westminster (15-7, 10-2) in the opener, 11-6. Anthony went 4 for 4 with a double while Montone had three hits.

Grove City took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Montone singled and later scored on a single by junior pitcher Abigail Meadors (Warren, Ohio/Champion). Montone and Anthony both had run-scoring singles in the seventh inning for the Wolverines.

Meadors pitched 5 2/3 innings and allowed six earned runs. Sophomore relief pitcher Ellie Day (New Marshfield, Ohio/Alexander) closed out the sixth inning.

The Wolverines will host Thiel at 4 p.m. Thursday in the conclusion of the teams' suspended March 26 game. Thiel leads the game 1-0 in the top of the third inning.
