Wolverines fall twice in extra innings

BETHANY, W.Va. -- The Grove City College softball team dropped a pair of extra-inning games Saturday in a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader at Bethany. Bethany won the opener, 4-3, then took the nightcap by a 3-2 score. Both games went nine innings.

Grove City (14-8, 6-6) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the opener as freshman first baseman Cora Myers (Blanchard, Pa./Central Mountain) singled in junior left fielder Evelyn Montone (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) and senior center fielder Noel Anthony (Clarion, Pa./Clarion).

The Wolverines added to the lead in the fourth inning when senior catcher Kristin Tesch (Clinton Township, Mich./Chippewa Valley) doubled in junior pitcher Alexis Jackson (Coventry Township, Ohio/Coventry).

Bethany scored single runs in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings. The Bison then broke the 3-3 tie in the bottom of the ninth inning on Olivia Kidd's single that scored Amber Dedmon.

Jackson and Myers both doubled for Grove City. Montone went 2 for 5 while sophomore third baseman Sydney Shay (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) added two hits.

Jackson allowed one earned run in six innings. Sophomore Alivia Lantzy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Avonworth) pitched 2 2/3 innings of relief. She allowed two runs while striking out three. Lantzy took the defeat.

Grove City trailed 2-0 in the nightcap but scored twice in the second inning. Freshman pinch runner Zoie Bhat (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) scored on an error while Montone's sacrifice fly scored freshman DP Erin Timmes (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin).

Shay went 2 for 3 in Game Two as the Wolverines finished with five hits.

Sophomore pitcher Ellie Day (New Marshfield, Ohio/Alexander) threw a complete game as she pitched a career-high 8 2/3 innings. Day struck out three but absorbed the defeat.

Grove City will host Chatham at 3:30 p.m. Monday in a conference doubleheader.
