CLEARWATER, Fla. -- The Grove City College women's lacrosse team faced a 4-0 deficit in the first 5 minutes, 30 seconds of its Spring Break finale Thursday afternoon against Clark (Mass.).
Then, the Wolverines punched back.
Sophomore midfielder
Mia Mygatt (Silver Spring, Md./Brookewood) and junior midfielder
Jess Robinette (Mohnton, Pa./Twin Valley) both scored twice in the final nine minutes of the first quarter to give Grove City a 5-4 lead. Robinette then scored twice in a 54-second span of the second period to give the Wolverines the lead for good as Grove City rolled to a 13-6 non-conference victory at Countryside Sports Complex.
Grove City led 10-6 at halftime, then blanked Clark in the second half. Grove City held Clark to eight total shots in the second half.
Robinette finished with four goals while Mygatt fired in three goals. Junior attack
Gwen Shilling (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) scored a pair of goals. The Wolverines also received goals from senior attack
Jackie Rowell (Laurel, Md./Reservoir), senior defender
Reese Hasley (Cheswick, Pa./Deer Lakes), junior midfielder
Tori Stevenson (Butler, Pa./Butler) and freshman midfielder
Addy Porter (Jenks, Okla./Jenks).
Junior attack
Taylor Blythe (Mendon, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) assisted on a season-high five goals. Rowell and Stevenson also had assists.Â
Robinette's power play goal with 8:15 left in the first half gave Grove City a 7-6 lead. Rowell scored on the power play at 6:37 while Blythe later assisted on second quarter goals from Porter and Shilling. Hasley pushed the lead to 11-6 with a short-handed goal four minutes into the third period.Â
Unassisted goals by Mygatt and Stevenson in the fourth quarter closed the scoring.
Hasley also led Grove City (2-3) by causing four turnovers. Robinette, Shilling and senior goalie
Mia Gallagher (Mogadore, Ohio/Archbishop Hoban) all picked up four ground balls. Mygatt and Porter both had three draw controls.
Gallagher made eight saves to earn her second win of the week. Grove City outshot Clark, 31-23, including a 23-12 margin in shots on goal.Â
Grove City had 18 turnovers. Clark turned over possession 17 times.
Grove City returns home to Don Lyle Field for a 5 p.m. non-conference bout March 11 against Fredonia State (N.Y.).
