Wolverines take Game 1; weather halts nightcap

GREENVILLE, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team earned a 7-2 victory Thursday afternoon at Thiel in Game One of a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader at Tomcat Park. Thunderstorms halted the second game after two innings, with Thiel owning a 1-0 lead. The suspended game will be resumed at a later date.

Grove City (11-2, 3-0) pounded out 13 hits in the opener, paced by a career-best 4-for-4 outing from sophomore right field Sydney McBride (Gainesville, Va./Battlefield). Junior left fielder Evelyn Montone (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) rapped three hits while senior catcher Kristin Tesch (Clinton Township, Mich./Chippewa Valley) went 2 for 3.

Tesch gave Grove City a 1-0 lead in the second inning when she singled in freshman pinch runner Zoie Bhat (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany). The Wolverines added two runs in the third inning as sophomore second baseman Alivia Lantzy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Avonworth) drove in Montone with a triple, then came home on a groundout by freshman DP Cora Myers (Blanchard, Pa./Central Mountain).

After Thiel trimmed the lead to 3-2 with single runs in the third and fifth innings, Grove City sewed up the victory with a four-run outburst in the seventh inning. Junior pitcher Abigail Meadors (Warren, Ohio/Champion) and sophomore third baseman Sydney Shay (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) each roped run-scoring singles that respectively scored Montone and freshman pinch runner Zoey Lindner (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk).

McBride's bases-loaded single then brought home Meadors and Shay.

Meadors (6-0) earned the win by throwing a complete game. She allowed two earned runs and five hits in seven innings. Meadors struck out four. She moved into second place in program history in career strikeouts as she has now fanned 295 batters in her three seasons at the College. Lauren Pennell (2008-11) owns the program record with 302 strikeouts.

Winners of seven consecutive games, Grove City will visit conference foe Waynesburg University for a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday.
