GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team opened its home and Presidents' Athletic Conference schedules Wednesday afternoon by sweeping a doubleheader from visiting Washington & Jefferson (5-9, 1-3) at College Field. Grove City (10-2, 2-0) pulled out a 3-2 win in the opener and then captured a 6-2 triumph in Game Two.
Grove City jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of Game One as sophomore second baseman
Alivia Lantzy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Avonworth) doubled in junior left fielder
Evelyn Montone (Allentown, Pa./Parkland), then scored on a single from freshman DP
Cora Myers (Blanchard, Pa./Central Mountain).
W&J cut the lead in half with an unearned run in the top of the sixth inning but Myers cracked a double in the bottom of the sixth inning that scored freshman pinch runner
Zoey Lindner (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk).
Lantzy doubled twice while going 2 for 3. Myers also finished 2 for 3.
Junior pitcher
Abigail Meadors (Warren, Ohio/Champion) earned the victory by throwing a four-hitter. She did not allow a hit until the fifth inning. Meadors (5-0) struck out one, walked two and allowed no earned runs in her seven innings in the circle.
Five of Grove City's nine hits in the nightcap went for extra bases. Lantzy's first-inning triple, the first of those five hits, drove in senior center fielder
Noel Anthony (Clarion, Pa./Clarion) to put the Wolverines up 1-0.
W&J forged a 1-1 tie in the top of the second inning but Grove City reclaimed the lead by scoring twice in the bottom of the second. Meadors doubled in freshman pinch runner
Zoie Bhat (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) to break the tie. Montone then doubled to left field, scoring sophomore right fielder
Elena Tylka (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township), who ran for DP Meadors.
W&J closed the margin to 3-2 in the top of the sixth but Grove City sealed the win with a three-run outburst. Sophomore catcher
Sydney Shay (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) belted a two-run double that scored Myers and Lindner. Shay later scored when freshman third baseman
Emma Vok (Wintersville, Ohio/Indian Creek) singled through the left side.
Lantzy finished 2 for 3 while Anthony went 2 for 4. Myers doubled.
Lantzy earned the pitching win by throwing a complete game. Lantzy (4-1) struck out four while allowing two runs and nine hits in seven innings.
Grove City will visit Thiel in a rescheduled conference doubleheader Thursday at 2 p.m. in Greenville.
