WEST MIFFLIN, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team opened its northern schedule Friday by taking both ends of a non-conference doubleheader from host Carlow. Grove City won the opener in six innings, 19-4, then picked up a 5-3 win in the nightcap at West Mifflin High School.
Grove City (8-2) pounded out 22 hits in Game One, including 10 doubles. Eight of Grove City's nine offensive starters had at least two hits in the victory.Â
Sophomore second baseman
Alivia Lantzy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Avonworth) went 4 for 5 with three doubles and five runs batted in while junior pitcher
Abigail Meadors (Warren, Ohio/Champion) also went 4 for 5. Meadors cracked a double, drove in two runs and scored three times.Â
Freshman DP
Cora Myers (Blanchard, Pa./Central Mountain) drove in three runs with a double and two singles while senior catcher
Kristin Tesch (Clinton Township, Mich./Chippewa Valley) belted a pair of doubles. Senior center fielder
Noel Anthony (Clarion, Pa./Clarion), junior first baseman
Alexis Jackson (Coventry Township, Ohio/Coventry) and junior left fielder
Evelyn Montone (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) all doubled and singled in Game One while sophomore right fielder
Sydney McBride (Gainesville, Va./Battlefield) went 2 for 4.Â
Grove City took command of the opener by scoring six times in the top of the fourth inning. Tesch, Montone and Lantzy all roped run-scoring doubles while Jackson's two-run double gave Grove City a 9-2 lead.Â
The Wolverines then added 10 more runs in the top of the sixth inning. Lantzy doubled in Anthony, then scored on a Myers single. Sophomore third baseman
Sydney Shay (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) drove in Meadors with a sacrifice fly. Tesch, Lantzy and Meadors all doubled in runs later in the inning as 15 batters came to the plate.Â
Meadors earned the win by striking out five batters in six innings. She allowed two earned runs and seven hits.Â
Freshman third baseman
Emma Vok (Wintersville, Ohio/Indian Creek) broke a 3-3 tie in the top of the seventh by singling in Jackson. Vok later scored on a single by freshman second baseman
Erin Timmes (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin).Â
Carlow put the tying run on base on the bottom of the seventh but winning pitcher Lantzy induced a game-ending double play. Lantzy allowed two earned runs while striking out six batters in seven innings.Â
Grove City finished with 14 hits, led by a career-best 4-for-4 outing from Jackson. Vok went 2 for 3 while Shay doubled and singled in four at bats. Timmes also went 2 for 4. Anthony and freshman shortstop
Lily Meidl (Pataskala, Ohio/Licking Heights) both doubled.Â
The Wolverines will visit Thiel at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Presidents' Athletic Conference opener.
