Grove City edged late

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team closed the 2025-26 season Tuesday night with a 57-50 setback to visiting Chatham in the quarterfinals of the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament at the Grove City College Arena. 

Grove City took a 40-37 lead with 8:44 left in the game when junior forward Brooke McCoy (Irwin, Pa./Hempfield) buried a three-pointer from the top of the key. However, Chatham (18-7) outscored the Wolverines, 20-10, over the remainder of the fourth quarter. 

Chatham went 8 of 14 (57 percent) from the field in the fourth quarter while Grove City made only two of its final nine field goal attempts. Overall, Grove City shot 27 percent (17 of 63) for the game while Chatham went 22 of 57 (39 percent).

Junior guard Bethany Thompson (Exeter Township, Pa./High Point Baptist) paced the Wolverines (17-9) with a season-high 12 points while senior center Meredith Sherrerd (New Braunfels, Texas/New Braunfels) added 11 points. 

Grove City trailed 9-6 after the first quarter but surged to a 24-20 lead by halftime with a 14-4 run. Senior guard Reese Hasley (Cheswick, Pa./Deer Lakes) drained a pair of three-pointers while junior guard Sarah Pifer (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) also buried a three-pointer. Thompson's fast-break layup gave Grove City a 21-18 lead. She then closed the first half with a 25-footer as time expired.

The Wolverines scored the first seven points of the second half as Hasley hit a jumper, Pifer swished another three-pointer and senior center Emma Ulmer (Milton, Pa./Northumberland Christian) put back an offensive rebound. Chatham answered with a 14-3 run that cut the lead to 34-32. Grove City led 37-34 after 30 minutes.

Sherrerd grabbed nine rebounds while Ulmer finished with eight rebounds. Thompson totaled seven rebounds as Grove City owned a 44-37 edge in that category. 

Hasley finished with five assists. Sophomore guard Kailey Devlin (Turbotville, Pa./Meadowbrook Christian) had three assists. Hasley also had three steals and Sherrerd blocked three shots. 

Grove City had 22 turnovers while Chatham committed 17 turnovers. Grove City held a 14-12 edge in points off turnovers, however. 

Madison Nereu led Chatham with 16 points. The Cougars will visit Washington & Jefferson in Thursday's semifinals. W&J downed Geneva in a quarterfinal clash, 80-55.

Hasley, Sherrerd, Ulmer and center Katie Hoff (Crafton, Pa./Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) are Grove City's four seniors. The Wolverines won the inaugural Presidents' Athletic Conference North Division title this season.
