MISENHEIMER, N.C. -- The Grove City College baseball team dropped a pair of games Saturday at Pfeiffer University's Joe Farabee Classic. Hampden-Sydney downed Grove City in the opener, 16-12, while Maryville (Tenn.) blanked Grove City in the nightcap, 17-0.
The Wolverines pounded out 18 hits in the opener, led by a 5-for-6 outing from senior center fielder
Nick Sampson (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township). Sampson doubled twice and scored four runs.Â
Senior first baseman
Colin Marinpetro (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny) went 4 for 4 with a double while junior right fielder
Dan Luko (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) also doubled. Sophomore DH
John McIntyre (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) drove in three runs while senior shortstop
Raymond Stierer (Sewickley, Pa./Eden Christian) and freshman second baseman
Nick Remish (Norristown, Pa./Methacton) both knocked in two runs.Â
Freshman pitcher
Noah Mackie (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) pitched the first three winnings for Grove City, allowing five earned runs. Freshmen
Caz Ostrowski (Essex, Mass./Covenant Christian) and
Wyatt Hopson (Middletown, Md./Middletown) both followed in relief, with Ostrowski taking the defeat.
Sophomore
Corey Veverka (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg) pitched the seventh and eighth innings while freshman
Ethan Lingrell (Ottawa, Ontario/Veritas Academy) threw a scoreless ninth inning in his collegiate debut.
Maryville held Grove City to one hit -- a Luko single -- in Saturday's second game. Junior pitcher
Bryce Trischler (Mars, Pa./Shady Side Academy) started and allowed six earned runs in four innings. Sophomore
Dash Lanzilotta (Northfield, Ohio/Nordonia), freshman
Graham Romer (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) and junior
Wil Peters (Mesa, Ariz./Westwood) all pitched in relief.Â
Grove City (1-2) returns to action February 27 when the Wolverines play John Jay at the RussMatt Invitational in Central Florida.
